Fooooood - Think You Know?
May 2nd, 2008 by Braddah LanceSo Happy Friday all you Lanceformers/Kwonics/Lurkahs!
The weather not so good today - it's been awhile since a Friday began gloomy - but still get chance fo' turn around. It's still a Feel Good Friday so if you not feelin' good yet...suck it up!
After being hounded about fooood reviews/pics (or the lack of focus on the pics) I got something bettah...well maybe. I'm sure some of you have either seen this circulating but 9th Island Girl had sent this "Food Quiz - Local Style (of course)" via email to me braggin' about her score.
Well, she should do well on that quiz cause if she ain't talkin', she eatin'!
Get choke questions - 50 - but you should be able to fly through them no problem...if you know your stuff. If I remember correctly 9th IG got 46 or 47 out of 50. I got 46 but should be 48 cause I know two of them but for some reason I either not spelling correctly...or I'm just wrong.
Wassap Wit Dat?
The quiz does give intructions and they do allow for different spellings so no go pupule if you type something in and it's wrong - just try change one letter or something li'dat. When you pau, post your score and we'll see who da real foodie is! Plus da pictures stay in focus so nobody bettah complain eh?
We should side bet if any of da Katonks out dea goin' beat any kama'aina's huh? Anybody? Or you goin' be shame and no even post your score?
Oh yeah, I know we all edu-macated but no post da answers in the comments eh, bumbye you gotta buy lunch.
Later tonight I'll try answer da ones that people got stuck da most on.
Click below to start! Gan-ba-te Ku-da-sai (Good Luck!)
.
Answer Sheet... Fo' those dying to find da answers

SHOUT OUT: Ok, not a shout out but can everyone say a prayer for my players? Their first game of the season is tomorrow and boy they are going to need all the help they can get...... future blog to follow.... about how much more white hairs are overtaking my head.

First off. . . good luck to you BL and your players!
WOW LAU LAU. . . I got 49 out of 50, I don't know what 45 is.
May 2nd, 2008 at 8:31 am
Thanks - that was kind of fun. I got 49, too. Couldn't figure out #28. Not bad for someone who hardly cooks (but apparently eats a lot).
Good luck tomorrow!
May 2nd, 2008 at 8:31 am
I dit dis one befo not long ago.
May 2nd, 2008 at 8:37 am
I got this a couple of weeks ago - got 47/50, cause I couldn't get the spelling right on #39. Had a space where not supposed to. I call foul!
#15 - got dat one wrong too, cause I never had any that looked like the picture. I thought that's what was, but I never type um in cause never look quite right. ai yah. wrong already.
Chee, get plenny of these quizzes circulating! I got this one, Celebrities 1& 2, Movies, NCAA helmets, and cartoon characters. Tracy Nishibun is responsible to a lot of reduced productivity in offices across the state. Good fun though! Only thing, where da answers at?
Chee-hoo for Tracy Nishibun!
May 2nd, 2008 at 8:40 am
i did this one a couple weeks ago too! got all 50....ok ok i had to have a coworker help me on 3 of em...and ho so picky dem guys! no can use & gotta spell out A-N-D. now i hungry.
May 2nd, 2008 at 8:50 am
I neva see da movies, celebs 2, and helmets yet. Some people get planny time fo make these tings. I get planny time fo do um!
May 2nd, 2008 at 8:53 am
OK. So it's gonna be katonks vs. kama'aina?? Why gotta be like that??
Alright then, i have to admit I'm off to a bad start. In my defense, I skimmed through it really quick, cuz I gotta finish up and head to my daughter's school. Got 45, not bad, huh?
But there may be items that I know as one thing (from Mainland) that's called something else. The first ones I learned when I moved here was manapua (aka char siu bau) and pork hash (shiu mai). I remember taking my wife for dim sum in LA and she was asking for manapua and pork hash and the girl pushing the cart just looked at her with that "what are you talking about" look.
Thanks for a fun Friday blog. Gotta run. It may be dark & grey, but still a beautiful day. Enjoy, everyone!
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:02 am
My work place loves those quiz things. We wanna know who that "tnishibun" is and if that's all they do all day long. So far our office has run through 4 versions of those quiz things and so far we've been able to figure them out. Our only problem is that you have to spell the darn thing like the "producer" spells it. Wait till you see the "logo" version, it's an Infiniti symbol but the answer is another car maker. LOL.
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:06 am
Eh, the Tsaikos actually ASKED for permission to post this online.
http://homepage.mac.com/smurashi/misc/
I get 50! (Cause I got the answers. I think I got something like 44 the first time.) I was going to upload the answers for you guys, but my friend's site is down. I'll e-mail it to Lance, he can upload it.
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:14 am
Yumm!!! #28 pork tufu #39 sweet sour spareribs I got 45 and like many I know what it is but can't spell. I dunno what you call #45 with da cabbage and chicken, I think it's some kine Thai dish (dats wat my daughter said.)
BL, I had some spicy tuna just for you last weekend in Kona. But wasn't the way I like it, spicy but without all da goodies inside like the fish eggs and stuff. I like the one from Hilo Safeway. But I ate it in your honor with a cold one. Okolemaluna, Bottoms up! Happy Friday everybody!!!
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:37 am
Mahalos! But we going need more than luck...no joke.
.
.
Isn't da world wide web wonderful? (five time fast) Just updated the blog with da answer sheet below the quiz link...if you must look. : )
Mahalos Braddah Jason for da quick email with da answer sheet! You guys rock!
.
.
Cause we like to rub it in dat you no can pronounce da name so you no can spell 'em either.
Eh, jealous too because we no mo' In and Out hea.
.
.
Dang, scooped again. WWD?
Maybe just gotta stick to my own mo'olelo mana'o.
.
.
Thanks eh for ... suckin' it up! Yeah, Safeway makes some pretty good Spicy Tuna. I actually only ate theirs maybe a couple of times ages ago but couldn't shell out $10+ /lb - broke da bank li'dat.
.
.
You guys sure know your food!
I nevah see any of the others though - would have liked to try the NCAA helmet one... hint hint.
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:45 am
Braddah Lance,
I have to defend my honor...I actually got all the "local" foods right. I can even make chicken long rice (and I get requests to make it, from my kama'aina family). BTW, can you ever outgrow the katonk label? Been here >10 years already.
As for In & Out, I told my wife I wanted to franchise one here, but she said that it wouldn't do well, already get W&M, Teddy's etc. You like be business partner?
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 am
I got 50 (well, wit little bit help... only on two, but... !)! Some of those pics look a little bit weird... no look like the food it's supposed to be!!
MoOgooGuypAN - thanks for mentioning the logo one - was trying to type in "Infiniti" buku times then started to type in all kine answers 'cause neva work!! Now I goin' skip 'em!
TGIF! Have a great weekend, everyone!
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:51 am
For crying out loud, see I told you I cannot spell. Suppose to be pork tofu WWD!!!! Gotta go see my opto...ophta... my eye doctor to check my glassses. No help when no can type either. whatevas, going eat early lunch, maybe one Kilauea Loco from Cafe 100. Rice, chili, hawaiian smokie sausages, spam, mac salad all on one plate for under $5. Oh! Oh! Add one large lilikoi drink too. Oh Yeah gotta go now...
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
WTH is #23? Is that a head of a pig with the pig nose sticking up and it's front legs? I've been twisting and turning my head a this CRT. Maybe if I saw it on a LCD, it might be clearer - damn CRT crap.
And # 31 - that's duck, right? Why won't it accept duck? Roast duck - nope. Dead duck - nope. Donald duck - nope. What the duck?!?
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:00 am
hey acuradriver02...if u get the means to franchise in-n-out burgers then DO IT!! LoL!! thats always a stop for us when we are in Cali or Vegas!! i think if in-n-out could keep the same prices as in the mainland down here...it's be SUPER busy, fo'sho'!!
oh yeah...the blog topic...we got those in our office i think i got like 44 by myself but w/ the help of my co-workers get all 50!! some of them is kinda iffy...oh, and don't eat oatmeal when doing the local kine grindz quiz...it'll make your oatmeal seem even worse! lol!!
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 am
So wat? You offering? I'll bring da beer, Moogoo got da poke - wat everybody else bringing? And no, no can outgrow Katonk...cause your skin too white - no mo' Hawaiian sun. ha ha ha
Whaaa? Your wife is drinking too much chlorine/flouride water up dea. I think In & Out would do great here as long as the price and quality is the same - not like Wendy's boasting fresh made hamburgers but not in Hawaii cause we get da frozen ones. WWD?
So wat business partner? Monopoly money is good right?
.
.
You and everybody else not named Lance...
.
.
Thanks eh! My mouth is watering now. Wea Cafe 100?
.
.
Maybe if you "tapped" your monitor it would just "fail" one day.... not that I did dat before....
Exactly.
.
.
Mahalos to BananaFish for emailing me da oda quizzes! Will try 'em out laterz at home.
Au'right - Kwonic posse is Da Bomb!
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:05 am
okay...i still need 6 more answers on the logo ones...so lets start that one next!! lol!!
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
BL - good luck to you and your team this weekend, have faith!
I got 48, some pictures did look really weird.
Happy Aloha Friday everyone!
BTW - Moanalua Craft Fair coming up on May 10. Go find some stuffs for mom's day.
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:19 am
Okay, I got only 36 but some of the pictures were hard to make out. Maybe I've been away from Hawaii too long. It sucks being here. I finally found a place in Atlanta which had local food. Not the best but better than nothing, I guess. Someone needs to open an L&L here in Charlotte!
BTW, bruddah Lance, it sucked the Tar Heels lost, but we would have rather seen Davidson make it in instead to the final four!
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:23 am
@Rodney - maybe you would get #23 if was in it's "native habitat" - a foil bag.
I thought #31 was duck too! WTD!?!
I swear, I typed in like 10 different duck-based guesses.
Eh, I never get that logo quiz yet! just gotta wait for my email FWDing contacts to come through....need to cut my productivity down more.
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 am
Sorry to disappoint the Katonks. Only got 45 out of 50. I had trouble with the Philippino dishes. Plus, I couldn't see the somen (#37) in the salad. I can’t compete with the Kama’ainas.
This post is driving me crazy. I am spending the majority of my lunch hour licking and sniffing my computer monitor. Hope I don't get fired for that. At least there's no calories involved.
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:54 am
Eh islandgirl in nc, where in Atlanta did you find local grinds?
I've been here almost a year now and can't find any place. . . I'm actually about 90 minutes north but it'll be worth the drive!!!!!
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:20 am
Braddah Lance- i always read your blog and Cat's and this is the first time im actually leaving a comment...but anyways i actually took the food quiz and got 49 outta 50......i was stuck on no 6...i know looking at the pic it was zippy's chili but for some reason i couldnt get it correct...must be the spelling???? i dunno!
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:22 am
Oh, insulting me, ah?! WWD? Actually, I WAS eating while reading your blog, so it's true that I'm either eating or talking. You know me well. Are you sure I didn't get 48 out of 50?
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:57 am
Oh I got faith - all I needs is a miracle.
.
.
You nevah know - I can almost guarantee that L&L is going to be like the McDonald's of plate lunches. And yeah, I would have loved to see Davidson make it but Richardson was due to have an "off" game - too bad the team couldn't pull it through in the last seconds.
.
.
Me too - only found out in da answers dat it's da "oda white meat".
.
.
Disappoint? I tink you did damn good!
btw, how does LCD taste? I heard dat's a very "liquid" diet! baarummp-pa. C'mon, I couldn't resist dat one. Not even a little funny?
.
.
WOW! Mahalos eh! Hey all, we got another Lanceformer in da house! See, now we know your name and we going ask where you are wen you no post.
And den your first post is fo' say you kicked my a$$ on da food quiz.…WWD?
.

May 2nd, 2008 at 1:04 pm

May 2nd, 2008 at 1:14 pm

GA Bows:
Eh islandgirl in nc, where in Atlanta did you find local grinds?
I’ve been here almost a year now and can’t find any place. . . I’m actually about 90 minutes north but it’ll be worth the drive!!!!!
----------
GA Bows, Please don't crucify me if you don't like this place, but it was called:
Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ
(404) 638-1115
2100 Briarcliff Rd Ne, Atlanta, GA 30329
The reviews say to eat the BBQ stuff rather than the kalua pork. The guy does have spam musubi. It is a bit expensive compared to plate lunches in Hawaii, but at least it's something right?
May 2nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
BL-
Took a while, but figured out 50. Without cheating for a change. Food I can do. Celebrities no can.
May 2nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
BL-
Idea for get more post. Make like Tsai and give away prizes to say, post number 250. ST work in the sports department so he giving out sports stuff. You work fiscal so maybe you can give out cash!!!!!!!!!!!
May 2nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
I know they just didn't spell Waikiki with an "E?!
.
.
Hey das one great idea!!!
Ok, I got a prize for the one who is the the 77th person to leave a post - I will personally deliver da winnah 100 cold hard Mickey Mouse dollars payable over ten years or take da lump sum of $10 Minnie Mouse dollars - taxes withheld of course.
Beat dat!
May 2nd, 2008 at 3:21 pm
ho brah, if you make the 77th or whatever post a winner, going get plenny posts, but going have plenny posts like "77th yet?" I can only imagine what your inbox gonna look like after that.
I think since you have a head full of useless facts, ask a useless question a day, and see who can answer um first. Try get some killers that cannot answer with a google search.
Bruddah Rodney had some good ones about the old stores at Ala Moana....you must have something amongst the cobwebs?
May 2nd, 2008 at 4:06 pm
But make sure you get the answer to da question.
May 2nd, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Braddah Lance:

I know they just didn’t spell Waikiki with an “E?!
-----------------
I read somewhere they purposely put the "e" at the end so customers could remember the name or find them easier... it's a chain which originated out of CA I think. Honestly, I think I would rather fly to NYC and eat at L&L.
May 2nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm
That was fun. I got 42 out of 50. Couldn't figure out why I was getting the chili one wrong. It was because I was typing chili with rice and not chili and rice! But I did get the roast duck one - I'm a pake that's why.
May 3rd, 2008 at 2:38 am
Big Mahalo islandgirl in nc!!!!!
I'll be making a trip there this weekend.
May 3rd, 2008 at 6:36 pm
All you had to do was right click on the lower block and the answer would show up at he top of the page.
May 4th, 2008 at 4:34 am
I live on mainland (southwest) and was so taken by the pics of local food that I went shopping to whip up some stuff. Some of the pics was hard for tell, need close up

Wow Saturday / Sunday posters? And we got some mo' lurkahs out - Right on!
May 4th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Hi Lance. I took this quiz a few weeks ago too. The first time I got a 43! Then I tried again and got a 48. One of them, the spare ribs, I typed in so many diff. ways of saying it but none of them was right! It was fun though. Did you take the other quizzes? Company logos, celebrities & local celebrities?
May 5th, 2008 at 12:24 am
Good morning, hope everyone had a great weekend!
May 5th, 2008 at 12:31 am

I jus like Susan... must have typed buku kine names for the spare ribs! We always jus called dem spare ribs... neva call em "sweet and sour spare ribs"... was jus a given! Keep it up, brah! Enjoy, as always!
May 5th, 2008 at 7:14 am
It's right across the street from PC Best Buy. The little mall has Zippys, Chun Wah Kam, Kapiolani Coffee Shop and Baldwin's Snack Shop as the recognizable names.
Where you at on da oda big rock? So far we got a GA, NC and a few CA transplants and I believe a couple Vegas peeps out there too.
May 5th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Do you mean Kabuki? I thought had someplace new.
May 5th, 2008 at 11:26 am
I'm in Southern California. Been here since 1982. Wen I wen grad... Mckinley 1969! Yup... been away too long... but hey, reaching retirement age so maybe I can move back sometime! Probably not to Oahu though (my native island)... too crowded now! Sheesh, I remember wen Kakaako was nothing but low lying buildings and Ala Moana Center was only 2 floors!!! Used to work at Liberty House selling women's shoes, and ate at Patti's. Ho man... broke heart remembering dis stuff! Aloha brah!
May 6th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Lance - thanks for the quiz. I will share it with some people here in LA who are Hawaiian foodies by heart.
May 6th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Uh, yeah. So lo-lo yeah? I knew was some kine Japanese name.
.
.
suka:
Braddah, get quite a few L&L's ova dea right? My friends relative runs a couple - one near San Diego side. And yeah, I remember when Kakaako was "quiet". I surf Point Panic and used to remember when it was just all dirt and not crowded.
.
.
JT:
Did you make them a spam musubi with choke sauce and furikake? C'mon, you know dey gotta sample dat!
May 7th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Total bummers, man, jus total bummers! Eh... we can invent a new saying wen tings disappear... "dey went da way of Kakaako!"
May 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
