Check It Out

May 6th, 2008 by Braddah Lance

On Sunday Da Wife and I was running errands that we don't get to do during the week and because of this blog, I'm more consciencious in bringing the camera "just in case". There were too many times - because of the "pressure" to put out good stuff - that I always would mutter to myself, "sheesh, forgot the camera. That would have been a good blog."

Can you say compulsive disorder? See what the Kwonics/Lanceformers have turned me into?

Nah, I don't mind...now. I've adapted and now everything is either through a lens or trying to remember what I was going to write about in the first place.

But here's one - if you haven't heard or checked it out yet - a new store that opened April 25 (yeah, I'm late) in Waikele in the former CompUSA store called...

In case you haven't heard about them you can check their website out. Basically, it was two guys fed up with paying jacked up prices for items that we need/buy everyday: clothing and shoes. Here's an excerpt from their "About Us" section:

Steve & Barry’s® is about change. It's about changing the way that consumers shop for their clothes and changing the way that retailers cater to them. Steve & Barry’s is about stripping away the gloss and giving consumers something real. The fact is that great clothing doesn't really have to cost that much. It's a simple idea, but also a big idea—big enough, that is, to turn the industry on its ear. By delivering on our promise to provide premium apparel at impossibly low prices, Steve & Barry’s is single-handedly changing the retail landscape. We're busting the model. Steve & Barry’s significantly impacts whole communities, rejiggers shopping patterns, alters local economies, and sometimes even changes lives for the better.

When they say "impossibly low prices" you gotta stop by their store NOW because they have this sale going on and as the ad says, it will end when they want it to end.

Now I gotta tell you, when we stopped by there weren't much selection in our sizes but for the smaller and larger sizes there were more than enough. It sucks being "average". But the ones that found their sizes I can guarantee you that the average spent was at least $100. Do the math - that's at least 10 items or more (there were multiple sales too like 2 shirts for $16)

There's a kids, men's and women's section with clothing ranging from polo's, t-shirts, pants, jeans, shorts, surf wear, sports - they pretty much got it covered. They also got "name brand" endorsements from NBA star Stephon Marbury and actress Sarah Jessica Parker selling their own shoe and clothing lines. I also saw a Venus Williams shoe.

You could say they are a blend of Gap/Old Navy and their quality is comparable to the two - it ain't no Swap Meet material but from what I understand their normal pricing is nothing over $20 after the sale ends.

How can you beat that?

So I give it
Das right! Five Shakas! So you gotta check 'em out.

Check out the rest of the store, well it's not the whole store cause I still feel weird taking pictures li'dis.

No mo' shoes left...at least in my size.

.

One of the few "uncroweded" aisles

.

TONS of novelty shirts - most original, some we've heard before.

.

Das wat I say to Da Wife all da time....

.

Women's shoes....wiped out - even the display

.

Women are animals when it comes to shoes I tell ya.......

.

Oh yeah, had to stand in line fo' pay...took about twenty minutes.

.

Now only if some company would do dis fo' gas....hmmmm.

.

.

SHOUT OUT: Tomorrow is Kid's Day so please support our keiki and purchase and a Kid's Day paper. I'll be out selling in front of the Advertiser building on the corner of South and Kapiolani from 6ish to 7:00am if you like say Wassap...and of course, buy one paper!

Ho wow. Must have been hot in there. Even the sign stay sweatin'.

Went to a Steve and Barry's up in Washington. Pretty cool. Cheap too!

Kinda like Old Navy, but their clothes doesn't have "Steve and Barry" all over them.

I wanted to buy some T-shirts, but I get too many already. The wife would freak if I bought more.

  2. M:

    no mo anyting lef....

  3. GumbysHorse:

i went to steve and barrys near anaheim in cali...everything was under 7 dollars WWD!?!?

  4. JuSaMee:

i'm glad S&B's...oh wait dats a curry ain't it?? lol!! well i'm glad Steve & Barry's opened up shop here in Hawaii. we need more cheap outlet stores. i always think its funny that waikele calls itself an outlet mall, cuz some of the stuff there is WAAAY more expensive than going to the mall! i know most everyone else is checkin' out your pictures and goin, "man...that place is empty!!" but to me thats a good thing!! at least Steve & Barry know they're gonna be bankin' in hawaii!! we want them here as you can tell...i'm sure after they settle in they'll be able to keep things stocked more efficiently!! i wanted to pay them a visit, but maybe i'll wait a week or so to hopefully give more time for more inventory to come in!

  5. Coconut Willy:

It just shows how much the people are gouged in retail. I applaud Steve and Barrys and the stars that support the store. I don't think Louis Vuitton has anything to worry about but I'll check out this store.

  6. LRob:

I gotta check it out, but I live on the eastside and Waikele might as well be on Kauai. I gotta make plans for an all day trip...what, stay in da same time zone??? NAH!

Actually, it looks like my kind of store - t-shirts, casual clothes, shoes...and all cheap! I hate Old Navy because everything they sell has "Old Navy" all over it, so this place sounds good.

Oh, and nice pics Braddah Lance, but next time you gotta get one of you and da wife fighting the crowd!

  7. opso:

ai-sos.....I neva heard of dis place. I gotta go check um out now. But maybe latah when get mo stuff re-stocked. Thanx for da heads-up BL.

Does "Steve & Barry" make their own brand apparel too? Or they sell only other kine brand names?

  8. munch:

YAY for steve & Barry's!!! we checked it out the day after it opened...the poor crying signs outside haha had kinda choke stuff when we went but sooo much people in the store! and the line...ohhhh the line. it went around the ENTIRE store from the front all the way to the back, hang a left and kept going! needless to say we just "browsed" that day. but i figure if i can get one pair jeans for $10, it's worth standing in line for.

i was cracking up at the novelty shirts! i especially liked the one that said "i'm with stupid" and had the arrow pointing UP at your head. haha i'll definitely go back once the crowd has died down a little bit and they were able to restock their entire store...even if that means the sale will be over too ;-)

Yeah, other stores won't feel a dent but S&B will certainly get more than it's share of the market. Now when I need to "restock", S&B will be the first stop.

Yeah, they did a "soft" opening because they already know they popular. There was a small article in the business section awhile back but other than that, nada.

  10. kako mochi:

we went to steve & barry's on sunday too!! i've been waiting for them to open for the longest time and when we went, i was more excited cause everything was 10 bucks!! i especially wanted to check out sarah jessica parker's line - bitten! but yeah, the only sizes available were XS or XL . . . nothing in between! and when i did find something in my size - i had to seriously ask myself if it was worth standing in line for - it wasn't!! so i left empty handed . . . i'll go back to pay regular price and not wait in a long line! now all we need is H&M over here!!

  11. Rodney:

    pffftt. Buyers.

  12. b-relaxed:

Oohh...it looks kinda crazy...but i'm still tempted to check it out. Agree with kako mochi on H&M...Yes...we need on here now!!!

  13. Dirtball:

    But how's the quality?
I can get cheap clothes at Wallyworld but they fall apart after you wash them a couple times.

  14. Braddah Lance:

Yeah, Da Wife too. She luckily found one last pair and it was her size so we stood in dat loooooooong line. You know, they had 10 registers but at one time only had 2 cashiers.... WWD? Later they had 4... not too good at taking da money yeah?

Where's Wallyworld? Yeah, jury's still out but from what I "touched", it didn't feel "cheapy". I'll let you know how the two shirts I bought wear out.
btw, the H&M polos I bought - still good.

  15. Ukuhead:

So this is kinda like Ross'?

Anybody remember when K-mart first went open up in Iwilei and had all kines of traffic jam?

  16. hemajang:

Ross's is my wife's favorite store...Steve & Barry might be her new favorite store. Waikele is the next town over so she will definitely check it out...tanks, eh...I think.

  17. munch:

naww S&B isn't a Ross'....good prices like that though! Ross' get da kine "hand me downs" but S&B just carry certain lines. Braddah Lance, we saw da "big mistake" shirt and was gonna get it to give to a friend who's getting married but decided it would be in bad taste LOL
eh so wat, you bought all da "transformers" shirts so we can each have one and change 'um to LANCEformers?? 8-)

  18. Dirtball:

    Where’s Wallyworld?

    Walmart
