WWD! First
July 8th, 2008 by Braddah LanceBefore I begin da “first” WWD! entry, Da Wife and I would like to send out a most heartfelt Mahalo to all da Lanceformers/Kwonics and Lurkahs out dea dat wished us da best - along with your helpful tips in staying married. Thanks eh!
How did we celebrate? By eating L&L and kanack right aftah! We were both so tired from da past weekend our bodies no can handle and needed some down time - we nevah even eat da cake or watch our videos! So sad, too bad. We’ll get to dat tonight - will let you know how it tastes…if I no call in sick tomorrow.
Well for da “first” WWD! contest evah (aftah repeated requests to make one), I got my hands on two movie passes to watch the advance screening of Hellboy II. Each pass admits two so no worries, you can bring your hot date along too.
And there’s a “trick” to these passes but I no can reveal dem online… if you really like know, shoot me a holla’ offline.
So hea’s da low down:
The advance screening is set fo’ tomorrow, Wednesday July 9th 7:30pm at Dole. There will be two winnahs (yeah, you gotta win ‘em) and they’ll be picked and posted later tonight. You can pick up da passes either here at The Advertiser in town or to help you save gas, I can drop ‘em off personally (during your lunch hour or aftah work) as long as you not in booney land.
Hea’s da game:
Of course, Da Wife and I wanted to go out to a nice dinner to help celebrate our First. Da problem? No can decide wea. We both not fancy pancy so we no frequent da traditional “sit down” restaurants. We do go to 3660 On The Rise fo’ most of our special occasions but wanted to try something different.
Sooooo, post your suggestions and why and we’ll take a look. We’re looking for a “nice” place, good food, good ambience but no need be black tie affair (I still like go in shorts…but will throw on pants if it calls for it)
If you can also suggest what you like about the place and what specific apps/entrees/desserts you like the most is a plus cause we will try ‘em!
If a restaurant has already been recommended, you can also vote for it too so obviously the restaurant with da most votes will get our consideration too!
Eh, no shame either name any kine place but I shouldn’t have to go to da counter to pick up da food ok?
Top two choices win - Good Luck!
.
DA BONUS ROUND: Whoevah’s comment hit # 77 (was supposed to be # 777 but we not da Tsaiko’s), you one automatic winnah…but li’ dat going happen. ![]()

hmmm about the dinner…how’s about genki sushi? KIDDING!!! ok ok seriously, have you been to Mariposa? the service is excellent, food is good, and you not going break da wallet! or Roy’s is always a good choice too…part fancy, part local, BL can wear shorts (as long as no more puka). oooh or if you guys like garlic you ever tried Ninnikuya? it’s a tiny little place and make sure you go straight home after cuz da breath gonna be kickin’
ehhh, maybe i’ll think of more places as i do my…umm…what’s this stuff onmy desk called?….oh yeah work.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:35 am
I SHAME post this on the blog as its not even close to “3660 On the Rise” fare.
My wife had her birthday last week and I took the family to…(drumroll)…………………..TONY ROMA’s @ Westridge! Went in my shorts/t-shirt/slippahs. I know its not “fancy schmancy” yet the ribs are ONO! I had the baby back “Roma Rack” with Carolina Honeys sauce……….sticky LIP SMACKING stuff! My wife had some “frou frou” garlic/rosemary chicken something or uddah. She LOVED the garlic beans thing that came with it. My boy had some buffalo burger thing but when I gave him some of my ribs……..he was IN HEAVEN (must be a guy thing). We all had dessert(shared an apple crisp ala mode with her and “the boy” had fried oreo’s with ice cream dollops on each…..5 of them!). We went on Tuesday night and there’s this magician that goes “table to table” doing close-up magic. Made the dinner really fun and ono!
So if you nevah go to TONY ROMA’s in a while………………

PF Chang….for some really onolicious food, no need dress up or whateva and wasn’t there a coupon last week sometime for 25% off…..I went along w/some friends for lunch and it was super neat-o. The waiter was classy, the service awesome, and like i said the food….delicious. It is a bit pricey but hey….as the saying goes you get for what you pay for…….Good luck all and you too BL in choosing that ‘right’ place to take your wifee……Aloha
July 8th, 2008 at 9:58 am
o yeah, there is this awesome place in Kapahulu, sorry i can’t remember the name of it. It’s on the left hand side as your going towards Aina Haina, looks like a house but it really is a restaurant. (somebody out there help and if he picks it you win). But the steak was just awesome, the salads plenty, the service personable, the price to me was reasonable for 6 of us i think came out to about $180ish but was goooo!!!!
July 8th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Hey BL, I know you said that you both don’t like fancy pants places but since its your 1st anniversary, I think you should consider John Dominis. Why ? Because the food is outstanding (especially the seafood), beautiful view of Ala Moana beach and the restaurant will be closing forever at the end of this year. Its not any more fancy pants than 3660 On The Rise.
Remember: wen no mo, no mo !
BTW: If I win, give my prize to Cat.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Ruth’s Chris is one of my favorite restaurants - great steaks (My husband likes the filet and I like the rib eye… along with garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach… it’s rich, but we don’t go there very often), great service (always) and my favorite dessert of all time (the one with the berries). Like their spinach salad, too (we usually share everything). If you go to the one at Beachwalk, I think the dress is more casual than the one at Restaurant Row since they cater to the tourist crowd. What about Sansei or DK Steakhouse? Both have good food, but depends if you want Asian or steakhouse food. Hy’s is excellent (Bananas foster - flambeed tableside - to die for! Oh, and the entrees - think my husband had the Steak Diane - are good too! heh!), but probably more dressy (’cause it’s dark and velvety in there!). I also like Kincaid’s - great food (great fish dishes, salmon, steaks… and I love their Maple Pear Salad (something like that?)), great service and great desserts - and you could go in shorts (I’m sure other people will be more dressed up, but I don’t think shorts is a problem there)!!! Oh! And, I second munch’s recommendation for Ninnikuya! We love that place - it’s small and cozy and we love the garlic toast and steaks - (’cept your breath and your clothes going smell like garlic afterwards!).
Hope you and “Da Wife” enjoy a wonderful dinner, no matter where you go! “Enjoy” that cake too! Ya gotta do it!
I didn’t get sick from ours but it sure as heck didn’t get any better after that year in the freezer (it wasn’t that good to start with… so… blehhh… )!!
P.S. Just wanted to give you some dinner suggestions, no need put me in the running for the movie passes. I will pass on “Hellboy,” thank you….

Like Snow, I’ll pass on Hellboy, but last night we went to Le Bistro in Niu Valley for the first time and it was da bomb! I had filet mignon skewers and my husband had the lamb and we both really liked what we ordered. I would definitely recommend it.
Since you said you were going out for your anniversary last night, I was looking around for you but neva see you.

We just went to Bistro sun for the first time last week. Italian/Japanese fusion kine food. Was good, nice place, and can wear shorts and t-shirt too. We went with about 6 people and our bill was about $120 so prices was really reasonable. Its BYOB, beer is free, but they charge $5 corking fee per bottle of wine. Eh, just bring beer.
Location is diagonally across the street from TCBY, and 7-11 by pucks alley.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Only 76 more to go!

Yikes! See below……..

Why? I not!
Actually we eat Genki probably at least once a month. Gotta satisfy da spicy tuna craving! btw, fo’ those who actually read da comments - Pearl City Genki is da only Genki you can bring in your own beer! Yeah, your OWN! I always bring in a small cooler. They have their alcohol license but don’t sell so you can bring it in but shuuuuuush - no spread dat around bumbye everyone going for get buss and spoil it fo’ everyone else.

Eh, you should know by now, everyone hea has ‘no shame’!
Well…haven’t had ribs in choke long……..

All kidding aside, I used to go to Sarento’s at the Ilikai on dates. If you can, request a booth in the =side of the restaurant facing toward Ewa side. But not until near when the sun is going down. You can get blinded by the setting sun but afterward, the view is AMAZING!!! Major romance points BL! They do drop a shade, but if there is no cloud cover to block the sun, guaranteed cornea blowout!
The food is usually good and the service very attentive. It also tends to be pretty private as the booths all have high backs and are side by side so no one can bother you as opposed to having a room full of tables where everyone is eyeing up you and your date/ wife…
July 8th, 2008 at 10:51 am
issunboshi: Ho, you toooo funny Braddah!

How come no one like go? Like I mentioned before, I’ll fill ya in on a “trick” but I no can say it publicly.

Same restaurant as 9th Island Girl? Ho, BYOB…..going to da top of my list already.
btw, nice to see anoddah Lurkah out! Cheee-hooo! You have been ‘Lanceformed’. E komo mai!

yeah BL….you can pound ova dea. and garans ika ball barans you going be full afta dat. only ting….you might spend some coins.
if you like take your jagiya fo eat some ono yobo food….try Yakiniku Seoul. ho….da beef dat they serve is da winnahs. and if you no like cook yakiniku….get all kine odda ono dishes too.
and i no need win…..no can make it tomorrow night.
July 8th, 2008 at 11:30 am
aiyah you wanted details BL? sorry sorry hmmm i usually have some sort of fresh catch at Roy’s they make ‘um all kine style so you have your pick. their sushi is pretty ono & the pupus are winnahs too. at Mariposa i love love love the scallops, they’re yum!
my bf usually gets a steak dish, oh or their pork tenderloin was really ono too. but the best part is the MONKEY BREAD!!! woo hoo!! you go either place it’s gonna run you about 2 1/2 tanks gas (convert to $$$) which is not so bad considering the service, taste and ambiance.
for someplace closer to home got Ricado’s in Pearl Kai if you like italian (who doesn’t?!)…prices are good there too
now i’m hungry for lunch!
July 8th, 2008 at 11:41 am
I have a few I’d like to suggest/add (in no particular order):
1). Le Bistro in Niu Valley - been there several times with Da Wife. Love the setting just the overall feeling there. Also got the filet mignon on skewers, was ono, just a little light on the portion size. Parking is pretty decent, but is a little more challenging, now that Gyotaku opened up next door.
2). Gazen (across from Kaimuki HS) - just went there for first time for Da Wife’s birthday. It’s one of those izakaya places (not unlike Shokudo). Can try a variety of different dishes, but we really liked the tofu dishes. Parking is not too bad, at least if you don’t go too late.
July 8th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Bradda Lance
How about Lele’s at Turtle Bay…I love the atmosphere, the service is always great. The shrimp scampi is great, the crab spinich dip is awesome, and the chocolate cookie w/ ice cream is sooo ono!!!!! You gotta take her to Lele’s by the gold shop. My kids say that is the one place we going dinner when we come home for visit. Come on Lance go….take her there…you love the ride down country…..
Choooo….whoooooo….Lele’s here we come….
July 8th, 2008 at 11:50 am
BL…
oops on the Golf shop…not gold shop….the hotel maybe have gold sheets as it’s too expensive for kamaaina’s to stay there now…the golf shop is what i meant to say…and if I win you can send me your shaka signs as you know I live here in Utah. My son and hubby would love the tickets as they love Hell Boy…me..the shaka sign going be good enough….Enjoy…
July 8th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Hey BL,
Congratulations on the anniversary! YAY! hmmmm how about Lily Koi in Westridge, the Lily Koi braised short ribs(wit some LILIKOI flava hehe) wit da garlic smashed taters! YUMZ, so soft da ribs! hehe..and da sorbets for dessert?? OHHHHHHH…….YAH!
Or if you willing to go ova da mountain to da windward side, Kailua has Tokoname, ono Japanese food!! As Rachael Ray would say… YUM-O!!!!
Please no get sick with the cake ok??? We miss you when you gone! *sniff, sniff*
July 8th, 2008 at 11:57 am
My parents went to this place a couple times before taking us there…Uncle Bo’s on Kapahulu Ave…I think it was an italian restaurant before. I really liked it. I got a pasta dish and it was huge — lasted me like 2 more meals after that dinner. I looked at the website (http://unclebosrestaurant.com/) but no more menu listed.
July 8th, 2008 at 11:58 am
If you like steak, then I recommend Ruth Cris Steak House. Their ribeye is excellent. I only been to the Restaurant Row location, parking is convenient and restaurant is nice. We went there last year on our 34th anniversary and we enjoyed the ambiance, it was relatively quiet, and service was good without being pushy. If I recall correctly, we got there before 6 pm. so there was an early bird or something, anyway cost little less so total tab was around $100 or so…what da heck, special occasion right? Wife and I had a good time together and left very satisfied.
Another nice place would be Hoku’s in Kahala. Real nice island elegance with excellent food, no matter what you order. I had prawns, son had rack of lamb and wife and prime rib, everything was good. Can’t go wrong there but be prepared to empty your wallet. I also been to 3660 on the Rise, Roy’s, Tony Roma’s and PF Chang - they all nice too.
July 8th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Whoa, issunboshi, you took my idea of posting uku-billion times to make #77. Now I no like. I say go to Le Bistro like 9th Island girl suggested. Cozy atmosphere and ono-lishus food. We take da in-laws dea fo special occasions.
July 8th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Oh, my suggestions not part of contest, I’ll pass on the movie tickets. I started my comment earlier in the morning but got side-tracked (preparing lunch) and after I posted, Snow had already suggested Ruth’s Chris, so I’ll second her motion.
July 8th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
BTW, I pass on Hellboy II. If I take da hot date da wife might get mad.
July 8th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Had another thought…
3). Nobu’s - went their with another couple for our 10th anniversary (their’s too) last year. I’ve read some reviews from folks who were less than impressed with the restaurant, but we were very happy with the items that we ordered. We ordered a variety of dishes, but the most memorable were the black cod miso and the sushi platter (which we opted for “omakase”, and just left it up to the sushi chef). One other memorable item was the Kobe beef @ $27/oz. Needless to say, our dinner was $$$$$$…over $600/4 people, no drinks, mind you. But all 4 of us agree, have to try it at least once. Maybe we’ll go back for our 20th anniversary, at least that’s our joke now.
July 8th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
I like Sarentos Top of the I @ the Ilikai. The early bird special (5:30-6:30pm) is great if you can get an ocean view table for two. It’s a three course meal for $30/person. (no, it doesn’t include drinks) I think the menu changes daily. There are four or five appetizers to choose from, six to eight entrees and three desserts. The price, the flavors and watching the sun set is awesome. How can you go wrong?
As for the dress code, not too fancy b/c it’s still early in the evening. Slacks or nice jeans will work with a nice aloha shirt and loafers.
July 8th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Our family favorite for special occasions is Alan Wong’s.Got to much favorites. You gotta just go and check out the diffrent kind of ways Alan prepares the foods, got some neat names to go with the dishes, and the foods good. Not the cheaps but well worth it…….Enjoy……
July 8th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Oh yeah don’t have to dress-up seen some people in there wearing just shorts and t-shirt, but I think better to wear long pants and collared shirt, even denim ok.
July 8th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
How’s about Tokkuri Tei in Kapahulu? Small japanese izakaya-style restaurant. Usually busy so reservations are a must. Good sushi, great variety of dishes intended for sharing, have not run into anything that me and da wife did not like. Got beer and sake too. Gotta try, even if not for the anniversary. Congrats BTW.
July 8th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
hehe . . . i stay late, but my suggestion would be . . . orchids at the hale kulani
it’s really nice and the staff are always attentive and nice! i went every year w/the XBF for our anniversaries
July 8th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
my $.02
I gotta agree w/ the Ruth’s Chris recommendation. If you like steak this is the place to go. The only downside (aside from price) is that you might be too full afterwards for, uh, y’know.
I went to Sansei for my anniversary. Went early for 25% off - I dunno if the Oahu one same as the Maui ones. The wife and I like sushi, so we go as often as we can, even though Sansei is not “traditional” as far as sushi goes. This last go around, we had calamari salad (with the kochujang vinaigrette - winnahs!), miso butterfish, crunchy spicy ahi roll (the spicy ahi roll in tempura batter, then fried crispy, topped w/ masago, sweet chili sauce, and unagi sauce), Kapalua Butterfry, Spider Roll, and a couple of beers. Ho, happiness.
I see plenny peeps in Sansei w/ shorts, but then mostly tourists too.
Oh man, this thread is making me hungry!
July 8th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
I can’t use the passes (I’m not in town) but here are my suggestions. Can go both places in shorts, and get good views:
1) Buzz’s Steak House in Lanikai. Menu is on a wooden “paddle.” Salad bar included. Pickled onions. Brok-da-mout steaks.
2) Haleiwa Joe’s in Kane`ohe. Yah, yah, I know. (See Rodney’s entry about what’s in a name.) Great view - overlooks Haiku Gardens. Awesome awesome prime rib. When you get seated, reserve your piece of prime rib right then, otherwise you might not get - it regularly sells out. Fish options are also really ono.
Congrats!
July 8th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
sorry BL don’t know the name of the restaurant, but it does exist. The person that took me there left for the mainland a few hours ago so cannot call until after 6 so boo hoo….o well….when it pops up i’ll letcha know but by then your anniversary all pau….lol…..enjoy…
July 8th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Braddah Lance,
I also like joeydacat’s suggestion, Tokkuri Tei. The menu can get overwhelming, but that’s because everything sounded so good, and tasted good too. Parking might be an issue though…but the food more than makes up for that.
July 8th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
More than halfway to 77…
July 8th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
how about………
hy’s steakhouse..i have a coupon for $15 off..i’ll give it to you…

anything in the entertainment book..i have one and all restaurants are still good except golden dragon which closed down.

ANYONE went to the new one on the corner of South King St. and Sheridan St.?
“Hinone Mizunone”’s the name. Everytime I walk past there at lunchtime its CROWDED!
BL, please go there (not necessarily for your anniversary dinner, just for NO REASON) and give us a review. If JUNK, blame your doggie.

July 8th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
If you want something simple, good and real casual Side St., maybe a little to casual for one special occasion like this, but what the hey the foods good.
July 8th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Hi BL,
Talk about da ono kine grindz got this lurker to finally post. I love reading your blog, btw. I was getting worried about you during those few days when you didn’t post after getting hurt and busy w/ relatives.
Anyway, I’ll pass on the movie tix, but maybe Hakone in the Hawaii Prince hotel would be good for your anniversary. It’s a little pricey, but on the wknds they have a Japanese buffet w/ sashimi and sushi that I think is worth every penny. http://www.yelp.com/biz/hakone-restaurant-honolulu#hrid:kmZEwbwND6pq_p1dNA5xoA
July 8th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Ho wow! Get choke choices now! Mahalos and keep it coming! We really going have to do some research tonight cause all da places sound ono! In fact going try some just to try ‘em latahz! But da front runners seem to be Ruth’s and Le Bistro with multiple shakas backing ‘em up.
We got dat out of da way on da 7th….
.
.
Just read some reviews…mostly bad. Yikes! So I’ll blame da dog already.
.
.
Yeah, ate there and da food is ono! But little too “loud” fo’ be intimate eh?….unless we get da booth in da back…good food, beer, tv….ahhh, heaven……….twack! Thanks eh!!! Jus’ got SOS’d from Da Wife!
.
.
Au’ right! I hope you get a chance to post your $.02 often - No shame you know. We au’ good hea - as you know already! and just read up on Hakone…sounds reeeaaallly ono too. Sashimi and sushi…fo’ real kanacks!
July 8th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Eh BL, Side St. get one sister place called Fort St. in the Topa towers the old AMFAC building, get most of the same food and it’s cheaper. Inside is really nice and quiet, sometimes so quiet they close early so might be better to go early. Only open Wed, Thru, and Fri. nights, I think times are 4:00pm to about 9:00pm. But yeah go out to one good fancy dinner, like I said this one special occasion.
July 8th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
How about Hanohano Room or Aaron’s Atop Ala Moana? Mariposa or Assaggio’s? Not sure if Prince Court does dinner but I love their breakfast/brunch buffets!
July 8th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Jiggyboo’s mystery restaurant kinda sounds like Ninnikuya (da garlic place munch mentioned). It’s an old house but more Kaimuki-side rather than Kapahulu - on left side of Waialae as you go towards Kahala.
Forgot to mention had valet parking at Tokkuri Tei - another must.
July 8th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Here’s a suggestion not just for dinner, but for a getaway. This is what my wife and I are planning for our manyeth anniversary later this year. A room at the Ihilani, a late afternoon run down the path stopping at the third lagoon for a sunset goodbeer at the Kolohe Bar hand in hand. A leisurely stroll back to the room for a quick shower and then head on out to Roy’s across the street for dinner. You know it’ll be a good and relaxing atmosphere, and then back to the hotel for what ever is happening there that evening.
Or, for about the same money, how about an island getaway? But all my favorite eateries have closed so I have no suggestions to offer.
If not, Ruth’s Chris gets a vote from me also. Just order one starch and vegetable for the two of you and share. That way, you no be too tired for the rest of the evening.
July 8th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
MY turn:
alan wong, le bistro, ninikuya and assagio- mililani
i like assagio because it is not pretentious, the price is good and the food is delicious…. i love the lamb shanks..
Le Bistro is class act bu t too far away from PC…
NINIKUYA IS MY PLACE FOR STEAKS CAUSE IT’S JUST THE RIGHT SIZE AND CHOKE GARLIC IF YOU LIKE GARLIC…..
HAVE A GRAND TIME ANYWHERE YOU GO CAUSE IT’S NOT THE FOOD BUT THE COMPANY THAT MAKES THE FOOD…
July 8th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Another suggestion: Sasabune on King St. is supposed to have really, really good sushi. I haven’t had a chance to go there yet (hopefully I can convince the bf to take me next yr as a congratulatory dinner after law school grad), but one of my co-workers says it’s “a life-changing experience.” The chef there is supposedly sort of a sushi nazi and just makes whatever he feels like making and doesn’t let you put any shoyu on it or anything. I’ve also heard that the lower-level chefs spend 3 yrs only learning to cook rice! It looks like a hole-in-the-wall but it’s actually kinda expensive. From what I hear it’s worth it though…http://www.yelp.com/biz/sushi-sasabune-honolulu
July 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Hey BL,
A belated congrats on your 1st anniversary. Being such a special occasion, no be so “Chang-a-Lang” Spend some bucks on your lovely lady. Especially since she went “Kanack” you you last night.
My suggestion is Alan Wong’s. The food is great and the service is wonderful. You have to throw on long pants and Aloha shirt but dang, she worth dressing up for. Try the 5 course sampler. Kona lobster, onaga and Big Island beef for entrees plus appitizers and dessert. No can go wrong for the $75 it costs.
My second choice is DK Steakhouse. Only place in Hawaii that serves dry aged steak. Bruddah DK gives so much to the community we should support business owners like that. Besides, theirs a 50% off the second entree coupon is last weeks Mid Week newspaper. OK, my Chang came out for you.
Ask for a table close to the window. The place is romantic and the booths are high. It’s not as pricy as Ruth’s Chris or Mortons. The quality of the food is right up there and the coupon makes it a no-brainer.
May you have many many more anniversaries to celebrate.
July 8th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
I’ve seen Assagio’s mentioned a couple of times … might I suggest Verbano’s. The same guy that opened Assagio’s opened Verbano’s. There is three different locations, one in Aiea, another one on King Street, and the last on Waialae Avenue. To me, the food is better at Verbano’s and the service is excellent. Prices are reasonable as well too.
Ruth Chris’ is also great too. Kind of pricey, but food is awesome.
Sorry no more any other suggestions … high class not my thing. hahahaha.
July 8th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Shauna - My husband and I went to Aaron’s to celebrate our anniversary and they killed us with service (not necessarily good service, too - they tried to take our dinner order twice, tried to take out dessert order twice)! I didn’t think that could ever happen - they checked on us so many times, it started to feel intrusive! “Uhh… do you really need to fill my water glass up 20 times?” (with like, a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch of water??? I had to ask them to replace my water glass because they had filled it up with so much ice, I couldn’t drink my water! They filled it up even when I hadn’t even taken a sip!) Our food was overdone and extremely salty, too. Hopefully, though, it was a fluke - I had heard good things about them, so I was fairly disappointed :(!

Braddah Lance, I say you can’t go wrong with Alan Wong! I no like enter for the movie ticket, not like I was going win ( but just in case ).
July 8th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Da wife took me to Hau Tree Lanai before we got married to test me if I was serious. Passed! Nice atmosphere, right on the beach,
My fav steakhouse is DK’s. Once you have dry aged beef, no can beat!
BTW, choke entries today! Getting into record territory.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Oh, I know I going win but no can use da tickets.
I did see Speed Racer the other day. I was a big fan of the old series and was pleasantly surprised. My boy really enjoyed it too.
Saw it at Mcmenamin’s Bagdad theatre in the funky Hawthorne district of Portland. Sipped some beer and ate pizza during the show. Awesome!

So when BL and Da Wife going out for their anniversary dinner? Just read in HA today about 888 being a lucky day and a good day to get married as the BL&DW did on 777. It should be a good day for me as well, since my birthday, a feel good Friday, my son from Seattle will be visiting that day and the Olympics starts. Maybe I should take vacation that day or plan a sudden illness…no, bettah not, might bachi myself.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
BL, forgot to tell you if you go to Alan Wong’s when you call to make the reservations they will probably ask if special occasion, let them know and they usually print a special menu for you, and have everyone sign even Alan if he’s in. Makes for good souvenir to remember the date and place. Oh yeah and free dessert
July 8th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I guess we still don’t know who won those txts. BL must still be out dining and wining Mrs. BL. If he plays his cards right, we shouldn’t hear from him until tomorrow morning, sometime.

July 9th, 2008 at 12:18 am
bl, former lurker here, now present poster.
congrats on the anniversary, and may there be many more!
the wife and i really like HOKU’S at Kahala Hotel. nice/elegant, not too stuffy, and i’ve seen people wearing shorts (usually guests of hotel).
call ahead for reservations, but make sure the restaurant has “Crisped Fish for Two” on the menu and ask them to hold it for your dining. the best is if the fish is onaga. the WHOLE fish is prepared chinese style deep fried with three dipping sauces (black bean, ginger miso, sweet and sour), comes with fried rice, and steamed vegetables. the dish is a little steep, at least $75, but well worth it. Great taste, and portion is LARGE. i’ve noticed your appetite from other food pics…pretty sure you will have leftovers. ENJOY!

Hey Coconut Willy, I know McMenamins! I was so lucky, I happened by their High Street Brewery and Cafe in Eugene last fall when the Ducks got pasted by Stanford. Everyone in town must have been at home watching the game and crying (as I did watching the Sugar Bowl) because the place was empty but it was Beerfest day!! Ten or twelve specially crafted brews just for this one day. I ordered a goodburger and the sampler flight of special brews and finished only two, but tasted all. Dang it if I wasn’t by myself and driving back to Portland. No worries folks, the samples were just a few ounces each. Was SOOO GUUUUUD with the burger, I went straight to my happy place. Of course I brought home a few bottles of Hammerhead. I was supposed to meet up with friends where you were a couple of weeks ago, too, but that side trip never happened because the original purpose of travel was cancelled. I missed the Speed Racer movie and so now, I’m very anxiously awaiting the video. Shoots, if I had made the trip, maybe I’d have seen it.

Island getaway follow up…
Just found out!!! one of my favorite eateries in Kona has NOT closed it’s doors. The Ka’alaiki Lunch Shop in Naalehu on the ballpark. The absolute bestest locomoco in the islands. I heard the folks there are up at the crack of dawn scraping up the freshest mongoose roadkill on the highway. That’s what makes the patty so tasty ono.
Too bad Sam Choy’s Kaloko Restaurant in Kona closed a few years ago. The stuffed ahi and the tripe stew were total winners. I get the drools just thinking about em.
And what was the name of that family style restaurant in Kona across the King Kam Hotel? The one with the drawing of the akule as part of their logo. I remember their menu was about seventy five pages long with about two million different items…everything form Hawaiian food to Chinese. I think they stay closed now too.
And the King Kam Hotel used to have a pretty good King Crab buffet once upon a time. But I believe that fairy tale too, has ended.
Ho, I neva go there so long…
July 9th, 2008 at 10:15 am
