Snack Attack
September 8th, 2009 by Braddah LanceEvery time I'm in recover mode from an injury (hairline fracture going on it's 4th week and about 90% healed now), it seems like all da work I put into maintaining my weight goes all kaput. I'm unable to run, can't lift weights, basically inactive and as a result, da pounds creeeeep on back.
For those who know anything about training, a few days off of routine could translate literally into a week or more of lost "productivity". During injury, I try and tone down my eating portions since my activity level drops down a lot but recently I've increased my snacking.
And it's not da good kine either.
Last week Da Wife and I went to Longs and I couldn't help myself but to buy a HUGE bag of li hing mixed gummi candies. I normally nevah eat candies - especially ones dat are almost entirely of sugar - but I'm suckah wen it comes to gummies. At work, I have soda crackers and peanut butter (reduced fat) in my desk drawers right next to my Fiber One bars.... and of course watevah else is lying around da "community table". Da past two weeks or so Da Wife and I have been trying to increase our fruit intake but boy, is dat getting kinda expensive.
Healthy snacking actually should help you lose weight since it'll increase your metabolism but c'mon, seriously, who da heck can be dat diligent about eating healthy all da time? If we were, there wouldn't be an obesity problem now would there?
Do you snack? Are you a heavy "snacker"? Are you a healthy snacker? Wat "treats" do you have hidden away in your drawer at work? Wat's your favorite snack?Wat are your "must have's"?

... do I snack???
... who doesn't???
... well, actually I know a few people who are really good at not snacking ... but I'm like the other 95% of people who snack too much ...
... I'm not really a big candy snacker ... but I do have a jar of chocolates at work (the big bag of assorted chocolates from Costco) ... but it's for everyone else and not me ... rarely snack on my own candies I have at my desk ... co-workers think I'm strange that I bring it for them ...
... my favorite snacks and must haves are actually frozen stuff like frozen yogurt, ice cream and popsicles ... current fav is a frozen pineapple popsicle ... love it especially in this warm weather ... but I also love Breyer's Rocky Road ... always have these in my freezer ...

I don't snack, I eat fully blown meals throughout the day and night.
My 2 young girls eat better than I do. They don't care for sweets, they would rather have fruits or animal crackers for a snack.
September 8th, 2009 at 3:10 am
We do lots of snacks only because we have a 3 year old. He "grazes" rather than eats meals right now. We try to do healthy snacks like lowfat/fat free animal crackers, cheese, fruit, etc. We don't necessarily prevent him from eating what he wants but rather try to teach moderation. At the same time, he is so active that he needs the energy throughout the day. We try to make sure he eats sensible. The other thing we started to do was purchase produce baskets from a local co-op here. We get a basket full of fruits and vegetables for $17 every two weeks. Each basket is worth about $50 at the regular grocery store. By doing this, it was easier to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into our meals at a lower price.

My favorite is the kakidane.....usually ship home around 10lbs of that stuff as my kids love them too....and peeps at work. We have a snack table and I'd bring a bag in and it's gone in a day
WWD! I keep warning them to not eat it before any meetings....brush your 'teet and mouth wash first
IOnce I brought in a lb of Li Hing Mui, the orange colored ones...you should see the faces of some of them as they tried one......SOUR PUSS
That bag lasted a LONG time. We've got pretzels, trail mix, cookies, Crispy Creme, cake...something is always sitting there daring you to eat it.
Watermelons....love them
I buy the personal size ones, seedless, and cut them up in small pieces and eat watching TV. Green Tea ice cream, only if I can find it here in the market. I'm not into candy much except for maybe the Chocolate Skittles.
September 8th, 2009 at 4:05 am
I haven't met a snack I didn't like. I don't keep any snacks in my desk. I look around the office for other people's snacks. I call it "feeding the animals time."
September 8th, 2009 at 5:28 am
BL,
Snack ? Who me ? No way, yeah right, snack is my middle name. I don't really care for sweet stuff like candy or ice cream but for the crunchy, munchies I'm there. My taste for snacks runs in cycles, sometimes its arare, sometimes its chips and sometimes it sembei. Right now, the snack of the month is chex mix.
At work, I try to be good, I have some peanut butter crackers and nutri-grain barsin my office. But, once I get home and plop myself down in front of the TV, its chex mix & a diet soda.
Speaking of work, how many of you have to deal with people that eat your stuff but never buy anything ? We have some people here that I should claim as dependents on my tax forms. And these are the same people that grumble that your stuff is not up to their "standards".
September 8th, 2009 at 5:44 am
Looking at my office desk, I have an open bag of last week's multi-grain chips, Hersey dark chocolate squares, bag of pecans, raisins, Trader Joe's Wasabi trail mix, banana, and jelly beans that someone gave me and has been sitting there for a while and don't really like. The evil snacks I like but not healthy are chips and sweets after lunch. For some reason I will crave for a sweet or chocolate something about a half hour after lunch and a couple of dark chocolate squares will do the trick. However, I eat a lot of vegetables and fruit and will run/tennis 6 days/week so don't have a weight problem. I might even be skinnier (but not as ripped) than nkea. To be fit, you need to eat right in moderation and exercise regularly. Be Strong Live Long Lori got really good information in her blog.
September 8th, 2009 at 6:14 am
Oh, boy! Snacks are a must for me. I have a treat bucket full of candy and gum at home, and used to have bowls of candy on my desk at work.
Whoa, there are some really healthy eaters who post here! I wish I could include myself among them.
September 8th, 2009 at 6:16 am
Eh, who ate all my snacks?????
BL you was at my desk?
Who doesn't snack?
Depending on the mood or what's on sale, I might have some chocolate candy (too sweet for regular snacking) I might have some chips but I prefer Hilo's Maebo Noodle Won Ton Chips. I might have dried fish snacks in the frig. If not crackers and peanut butter.
I don't have much snacks at work since we are rarely in the office lately. Eat Big Lunch and small dinner.
For one guy that so active you not suppose to gain weight.......oh wait, you almost MLC yeah? Da metabolism slowing down cuz. Better get on dat bike. NO NOT DA SCOOTER
Nah take care braddah.
September 8th, 2009 at 6:24 am
I thought you broke your wrist, not your leg. What, cannot even go walking because of broken wrist?!? WWD????
There's lots of cardio machines that don't use your wrist either, like stair climbers and stationary bikes.
September 8th, 2009 at 6:30 am
Good morning BL!
Who doesn't snack?
I really don't snack, I normally just eat my 3 meals a day and maybe a snack here and there a few times a week. I drink water all day though.
My weight has stabilized for years now, even with exercise my weight hasn't gone down and even when I can't exercise for a week or so I haven't put on the lbs.
September 8th, 2009 at 6:55 am

September 8th, 2009 at 7:30 am
Aloha everyone!!
I don't snack much. If I do I like ice cream although lately it has been frozen yogurt. I don't have any snacks at my desk at work. I just drink green tea all day.
BL - We made it to the Kauai County Fair last Sunday. It was great. Much smaller than LA's. I loved the fact the local schools ran the food booths. I tried Li Hing Apples for the first time. They didn't taste much different from regular apples. It did get me to try Li Hing flavor on my shave ice and that was good. We also ate malasadas. Yep, all the food offered at the fair was very different from the food at LA County (mostly fried foods there).
I hope everyone has a great week. I am trying to get over my depression at being back to work. Boss is not in today so that is helping.
September 8th, 2009 at 7:43 am
Yeah, peanuts mostly. Dry roasted. Gotta have some chips too.
Bad, real bad.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:03 am
No snack table at work. Good cause then I won't snack. I try to eat healthy and have a box of Triscuit at my desk. I also bring in a piece of fruit to eat at work. Home is a different story...snack table at home is filled with granola bars and chips. Our freezer is stocked with ice-cream too! Now, if only I could follow through and eat healthy at home!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:22 am
I can't live without potato chips. And, I love Milky Way bars. But, I usually cook healthy meals that include vegetables and fruits.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:22 am
I try to eat more fruits, these days. Right now I have 2 bananas, a nectarine and a plum on my desk. The only thing is, we have lots of cookies and other junk at our office and I end up eating some of those, too. The peanut butter is a good idea. I love peanut butter and it would be better for me than cookies.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Good Morning All!
We don't have a snack table anymore, because we have too many, as roach puts it, "dependents." Only eat, and no bring nothing. I was tired to be one of the few "bringers," as these donkeys used to devour whatever was brought in. Brah, it's a snack, not your lunch! WWD!!??!
So I stash all my snacks in my desk, and don't share, except with a select few.
I have a couple granola bars in my desk, and an assortment of candy and salty snacks.
But I drink diet soda, so it's all good.
haha!
September 8th, 2009 at 9:09 am
I'm not really a snacker. After dinner I sometimes have something sweet...maybe an ice cream bar. l may have some cashews or peanuts when watching tv. At sports events, sunflower seeds or peanuts. I should eat more fresh fruits...
September 8th, 2009 at 9:41 am
If you brought some in for me, I wouldn't think dat was strange.
I love frozen stuff too but only on hot days or wen I'm really craving it. We seem to always have ice cream in da freezer too.... too bad it's already been in there/stays in there for months!
..........................
..........................
Dat's usually my M-O but lately I've been feeling like my metabolism hasn't been "working" so I'm trying to shake things up.
Dat's pretty darn good! We we get keiki, sweets will only be a bonus - nevah a snack.... at least we going try.
...........................
...........................
Yup, gotta find dat balance.
..........................
..........................
You don't have to dare me to eat Crispy Creme's.
Try cutting a hole out and adding your favorite "spirit" then cubing them.
Heh? Chocolate Skittles? Now dat's just wrong!
.........................
.........................
..........................
..........................
I'm da same. No can just stay on "one" snack. Gotta get variety and change it up.
..........................
..........................
If you add a mini fridge in there you can open up your own sundry store right in your office.
A couple..... or a handful?
...........................
...........................
We all eat healthy..... jus' dat some people's food pyramid stay "custom made".
..........................
..........................
Das wat happens wen you no stay and go holoholo all da time.
I stay opposite - eat small throughout da day and pound at dinnah. Don't ask me how I'm not 300lbs yet.....
You tellin' me!
.........................
.........................
But dat would mean I'd have to be a member at gym which I am not. I have enough equipment at Gym Casa de Kwon to satisfy any routine..... although dat would mean I'd have to transform da treadmill from clothes hangar/storage back to usable condition.
September 8th, 2009 at 10:35 am
Mmmmm snacks. I try not to keep junk at the office - it's just too easy to eat it without thinking. I used to be addicted to blueberries; now I'm addicted to white nectarines - they're so danged good. Otherwise, almonds are good and yummy. We're coming into apple season and then tangerine season up here. Yogurt all year 'round.
Otherwise, for junk stuffs, I love anything crunchy - chips especially. Dark chocolate is winnahs.
September 8th, 2009 at 10:45 am
snacks? yikes, they are my total downfall! i'll usually eat pretty healthy meals... to make up for all the snacks in between! normally, i love my sweets (oreo fun stixs are my current favorite late at night!) but recently i've been eating the garlc taro and sweet potato chips my mom bought! i haven't eaten those forever and they're so good! otherwise, i don't eat much salty stuff. at my desk, i've got pringles sticks (just like pretz, but flavored), oreo fun stix (oh! i brought some to work? heh.), special k crackers (i ate a few but am not really loving them), newton's fruit crisps (yummy, kind of like a crispier pop tart). i've also got fruit in the fridge... bananas and strawberries (did you buy your green bags, BL? i actually thought of you today when i bagged my still-fresh berries!).
September 8th, 2009 at 11:08 am
.........................
.........................
But you always say he has the money so technically, you used his money to buy your snacks so he should be able to eat them right?
............................
............................
OH HECK NO! Gotta be da soft, chewy...... gummy kine! I always "feel" da bag to make surah they soft before I buy.
........................
........................
I would think dat Kauai County Fair was much smaller than LA's.
Glad to hear that you had fun there! Sounds like all kine grindz. btw, did you venture out into da watah?
..........................
..........................
You no like da boiled peanuts? Chips - any kine? I prefer any baked chips but if not, Maui Onion is da bomb!
........................
........................
Fiber problem?
I keed I keed!

..........................
..........................
For a minute there I thought you were going to say dat you cook healthy meals including chips and Milky Way!
Das wat happens wen you try and speed read and not a speed reader.
..........................
..........................
Hmmm.... feelin' snacky right now. You just "subliminally" suggested to me to eat my soda crackah and peanut butter.
........................
........................
Won't da donkeys get jealous?
Sounds like a Halloween basket.
Of course! Why ruin da "healthy" snacking!
..........................
..........................
You're a real "nut" yeah?
Sorry..... couldn't resist.
September 8th, 2009 at 11:25 am
No water sports for me!! Hubby got a little wet (but was not too stinky when he got out) in Poipu but that was about it. We went to Kee Beach but by the time we got there we did not feel like staying so looked at the caves, got fresh coconut and pineapple and then left.
We expected the fair in Kauai to be smaller but I was still surprised by how small it was. I loved it though. I like the fairs that have a more family feel to them. In May by my house we have Conejo Valley Days with a fair/carnival is very similar to Kauai's fair. They are much more personal than the large ones. However, I did miss my Tower of Apples, bbq corn on the cob and deep fried zucchini and artichoke hearts. Now there's some great snack foods!!
September 8th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I know what you mean about the weight. Whenever I am injured from running the weight creeps up. It is frustrating!
I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, but have a total sweet tooth. I keep the mini bags of m @ m s in my desk and have one a day. I chew gum in the afternoon to help with the cravings.
September 8th, 2009 at 11:33 am
I hardly snack. Especially at work. I usually eat really bad breakfast, lunch and dinners. No food pyramid for me.
When I do snack, I like Ho Hos right out of the fridge. Oishiiiiiiiii........
Healthy snack....... granola bars maybe? I no eat that though......
September 8th, 2009 at 12:22 pm

September 8th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I love snacking. But it depends. At work it usually consist of what my co worker brings LOL. That would be fruits, peanuts, cake. Whatever you can think of she brings. I love snacking on almonds. FAVORITE!
I also love snacking on garlic soy beans (from sack n save! they make the best kind in my book) or boiled peanuts. Not really into candy or chip snacking.
When I go food shopping my kids always ask if I can buy them snacks. And of course they like eat um all in one dam day! like it's going out of style!
September 8th, 2009 at 12:27 pm

September 8th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

September 8th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

September 8th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Da only season we mainly get to look forward to is lychee and mango. It must taste real different wen they're "fresh". I've still yet to have a "wow' fruit.
.........................
.........................
Taro chips are winnahs but expensive for such a manini bag. And I've been tempted to buy da "fun stixs" but kept looking at da nutritional breakdown and wince...... I may break down and pick some up tonight.
No.
But now we're buying fruit to be consumed in two or three days so we're safe... for now.
.........................
.........................
You guys nevah check out Waimea Canyon and da end of the road up there? I thought was pretty neat.
Less like a "business" yeah?
Thanks a lot! I just drooled onto my soda crackah and peanut buttah.
.......................
.......................
If only running in da mind counted towards wasting calories instead of brain cells I'd be at 0% fat.
One M&M.... or da whole bag?
Is dat da "100 calorie" kine?
.......................
.......................
I guess you follow da "three 'square' meals" a day diagram.
Yummmmm!
.........................
.........................
So you're a moocher?
We pour some of da Sugoi sauce on ours and mix in a ziploc.
Perfect game food!
I thought you rollin' in high society there for a minute.
.......................
.......................
Sounds like fun.
.........................
.........................
Sounds like middle management.
........................
........................

Then wea exactly would you be sitting?
And da question is...... do you have to pay?

i like all kinds of snacks, especially with adult beverages.
for a while i was hook on eating ice cream or chocolate after drinking. talk about gaining some weight.
September 8th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Aw man snacks, don't get me started. Since I work from home the situation can get pretty bad. Although I have to admit that I eat better snacks (more fruit) in HI than I do in IL probably since I eat out more in HI and usually have very little food in the house.
The one thing I have to have around is chocolate. I try to keep something that comes in small portions so I can have a "bite" of chocolate rather than having one of those ginormous Snickers bars or something like that.

September 8th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
I eat pretty healthy during da week days. But, now with football season starting, da snacking and da cold beverages will rule. BL, BBQ grilling
counts as snacking????
September 9th, 2009 at 2:14 am
Empty your desk of any snack that is processed and wrapped in plastic. Eat apples, bananas, grapes, oranges or carrots, celery, baked sweet potato. Place these health snacks on your desk in plain sight so that whenever you feel like snacking, it will be the first thing you reach for. Do this at home, too! Place them in sight in the kitchen so when you make a trip to the kitchen you will reach for them first. Lastly, drink lots of water to fill your gut to make you feel less hungry.

Oops! Not in 서울 anymore. 오키나와 왔다.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:20 am
My rule: don't bring stuff home. I'm the only one here so anything in the apt... I'm gonna eat. Yah, I have stuff to nibble but my main eating is when I'm at work. Luckily, us gals at work feel the same about snacking so we keep it reasonably healthy. But our weakness? Nerds. hahaha
Patients are always bringing stuff which we love... manapua, Napples, cookies, breakfast, pastries... we split 'um up and take 'um home. Naturally they get the bigger portion cuz they got husband and kids with them. My stuff usually goes in the freezer "for future reference". Sometimes I share with my neighbor (my friend's nephew).
I used to not be able to resist Nutter Butter Creme Patties. Now it's just too darn sweet for me. bleh Good thing, I could eat that stuff by the sheet. ew

Hmmmm, is that a revealing detail? (Just kidding Sally!)
Sweetie says if we are what we eat, then he's cheap, fast and easy.

@KAN: bhahaha!!! didn't look at it that way at first. But you know what they say about nerds...
