One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other

November 10th, 2009 by Braddah Lance

Maybe dis might a MLC topic - at least in age        - but in case you didn't know, Sesame Street turns 40 today!

And boy they haven't aged one bit.... well except for da "real" people.

In today's technology of hi-tech, blue screen, realistic cartoons - the growing keiki has a plethora of choices to choose from to help "develop" their minds. From Barney to Builder Bob, it appears to grow more or less by popularity.

To tell you da truth I'm not in tune with "today's" choices since I'm a little out of da age bracket but let me take you back to wat I grew up with.

Sesame Street.... of course.
Reading Rainbow
Mr.Rogers
Professor Fun

Hmmm, das all dat stuck with me. Lamar Burton, da "sweater change" and da "shaka pow wow wow".... maybe das why I love da shaka!

But Sesame Street stands da test of time!

From all da "games" they'd play like "One of these things is not like the other", wondering how da heck is Big Bird sooooo big, why does a scruffy old green monster live in a trash can, how come Cookie monster can't eat a cookie right or why da heck can't anybody see Snuffaluffagus? (WWD!) Sesame Street rocked.... at least wen I was shmall kid time.

How weird is dat we used to see da "sticks and strings" of da puppets and nevah tink nothing of it but now everyone either points it out or looks for da string and not amused by it aftah they find it?

Sesame Street was always there in bright colors, interesting characters and they really broke the "barrier" regarding racial mixes and languages which I respect to da utmost.... and they're still going strong!

Wat are your fondest memories of "childhood" programs? Did you used to get da toys too? Did you used to sing along and participate in da games?

Let's all wish a Hau'oli La Hanau to Sesame Street!

  3. KAN:

I love Kermit singing "It's Not Easy Being Green."

  4. Ocean Lover:

Ah..........hello? THE CHECKERS AND POGO SHOW!

That helped develop my mind. Getting chosen for the "Very Merry Unbirthday" was every local kids dream! Reaching your hand into a big jar of pennies! Nowdays gotta be quarters due to inflation ;-)

    Hello Everybody!

Sesame St was after my keiki time so I didn't watch until my daughter was born. Elmo is my fave. My friend and I took the kids to Muppets Treasure Island in the theater and I tell you, more of the parents were slap knee cracking up than the kids!

We didn't get so many of the cartoon toys but, because I could get a hefty discount on Sanrio, our house was a Sanrio Zoo!

We, the keiki of the 50's and 60's had stuff like Howdy Doody, Checkers n Pogo, Romper Room, Capn Kangaroo, Capn HNL, Prof Fun...yah, all that quality stuff. Explains a lot doesn't it?

  7. roach:

    BL,

Captain Kangaroo was the star when I was growing up. I don't remember any Capt. Kangaroo toys or maybe we just couldn't afford them. I'll have to claim alzheimers for not remembering any songs or games on the show.

  8. sally:

One of our fave songs for my daughter and me:

because we both go into overdrive when we can sing and dance.

  9. Scott:

I watched Mr. Rogers. There's a rumor that he was a Vietnam vet who had 150 confirmed kills. That would have been cool, but he was just a normal guy who sang to puppets. Completely normal.

  10. David In Oregon:

OL: With inflation, the jar of pennies has to be a jar filled with dollars. Due to the bad economy, the jar nowadays would be filled with nothing but IOU's.

  11. sally:

Scott, interesting info on Mr Rogers. I heard that he was either Force Recon or something of that kick butt nature.

It's just another beautiful day in the 'hood. Won'tcha be my neighbor?

Isn't that how it usually is? The nice neighbor is the one with all of the heads in his freezer and the bodies buried under the lychee tree in the backyard...the man with a past

  13. Kage:

Checkers and Pogo was my time too. Early 70's.
Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Electric Company (HEY YOU GUYS!!)

My mom said I used to speak really well when I was younger, because I used to watch Sesame Street and Electric Company all the time.

Checkers and Pogo was good too. Was cool to have birthday parties where you copied all the games that were on the show. ;)

I remember seeing on an anniversary show for Checkers and Pogo, there was this doctor who was on the show when he was a kid, and he got to do the "Merry Unbirthday" thing and got to pull pennies out of the jar. He said he only pulled a few pennies out of the jar ON PURPOSE so Pogo would feel sorry for him and pull out a NIG HANDFUL of pennies for him! WWD!?!? Small kids selling out their pride for a handful of pennies. :(

But he had that many more pennies than me. ;)

  16. 9th Island Girl:

I used to love Sesame Street, and that was way before Elmo!

I loved the "C is for cookie; that's good enough for me" song. Maybe because I love cookies?

I used to think Mr. Roger's Neighborhood was boring. I think it's more interesting when I watch it now. Hmmm...

  17. sally:

BL: You don't know Capt Honolulu? Go to Rod's office/cubby/desk wherever it is in that bldg, and ask him to do the Capt Honolulu sign off thing.

ps: have salonpas ready for his sore elbow afterwards

  18. islandgirl in nc:

Since having keikis of my own, I have become reacquainted with the PBS line up which includes Sesame Street as well as the modern Electric Company. There are also other cartoon type shows on PBS such as Sid the Science Kid, Martha Speaks, Arthur, etc.

For me, the shows I remember fondly were Sesame Street, Electric Company and the Checkers and Pogo Show! Oh yeah, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood too!

As a side note... back again after a small kine hiatus. My son Jack was born last week after a few weeks of dealing with HBP issues during my pregnancy. He's in good health and our family of 3 is now a family of 4!

  19. EMM386:

Spidey on the Electric Company!! That's what I looked forward too every show. I liked Sesame Street, but I hate Elmo. Thank goodness he wasn't around when I watched the show, because I might've stopped watching.

I used to think Mr. Roger's Neighborhood was boring. I think it's more interesting when I watch it now. Hmmm...

I thought so too but for some reason I had to watch him change sweaters and send da train out.

  22. Rodney Lee:

I was thinking about blogging about Sesame Street turning 40, but I didn't really watch the show.

When it started, I was already 11 years old and was too busy playing outside to watch it.

And I never watched it with my girls because it was on in the middle of the day - when I was at work.

Although I did see it a couple few times. I think I liked when they did the "Today's number is n".

I'm still watching with my grandkids now and pleasantly surprised to see that some of the original cast are still there. Big Bird looks the same but Gordon and Bob are very grandfatherly...like me.
