OMG! Once In A Lifetime... for me
December 8th, 2009 by Braddah LanceLet me warn you, da first day action is kinda long so if you at work, you may not have enough time fo' read.
So it's Saturday night and about eight hours before we check-in and you'd tink we'd (I) be all set.
Nope. Not quite.
We had to drop off one of our dogs to my in-laws, build a 6x6 kennel for our other, take the clothes out of the dryer, cut the grass, move da cars and finish packing. Yeah, finish packing.
As I was done weed wacking the front yard (in the dark), I walked back up towards the house and see a silhouette figure in dark clothes walking along side of our house. The dog is barking wildly and this person looks like a he's staking the place out so I ask,
BL: "Excuse me?"
STRANGER: "........"
BL: "Excuse me?? Can I help you?"
STRANGER: "........"
BL: (ready to throw down) "OH JESUS!"
It was my father-in-law.
He's a very soft spoken man (literally) so I couldn't hear him between the dog barking and my visions of some wacko lurking around da house that I'd might have to go shmall kine nutz on.
Oh crap. Then it hit me. Is it that late already?
My FIL (very punctual) was picking us up at 7:45pm and I still didn't finish packing and have yet to take a shower.
Anybody dat knows me knows it's classic BL action.
Da Wife asks me about certain clothes and she's throwing it in my suitcase (yes, she was all done with her packing a few days before), I'm walking around half naked grabbing all da electronic cords I can find, the cameras, the laptop.... watevahs and throwing 'em in my gizmo bag. My FIL mentions not to forget my phone and a few oddah things laying on da tv stand.
No problem.
We're in da car driving down and Da Wife asks,
DA WIFE: "Did you bring your wallet?"
BL: "Uh, yup."
DA WIFE: "You got your ID?"
BL: "Uh, yup."
DA WIFE: "Did you bring the money and travelers checks?"
BL: "Oh no! I tink I forgot it!"
DA WIFE: "What?! Are you serious?"
BL: "Nope. I got 'em. Relax Babe..... no worries."
We get to da airport at 8:45pm (our flight is at 10:05pm) and there's dis HUGE line to check-in at United. OMFG! All dis time traveling red eye we've nevah seen a line like dis. Well, it didn't help dat da game was a blowout and it seemed like half da Wisconsin nation left da game early to catch their flight home at da same time.
As time ticks on and we move a foot a time, I start doing da "checklist" in my head. Cords, memory cards, cameras, clothes, no puka underwear, wallet, ID, cash, phone..... phone. Uh, wea's my phone? All I remembah was my FIL mentioning NOT to forget it and I made surah I nevah forget 'em on da tv stand...... cause I grabbed watevah was there and threw it on da couch!
Ai-goo. Bachi yeah?
Luckily my FIL nevah get home yet so he was able to turn around and go back to our house and look for it. Even mo' lucky I left da car/truck/house keys with him cause he was picking us up too. We finally got checked in at da kiosk and now it was a waiting game to see if he could make it before our time was up. Oh yeah, did I mention I thought I lost my small camera and while franctically looking for it for 15 minutes at da airport.... it was undah my carry on?
Not a very good start to da trip.
Wassap Wit Dat! (BL in da house!)
He found da phone on da couch, made it back in time and we got through security quickly and boarded right away with about 10 minutes to spare before they closed da airplane doors. Oh yeah, I forgot my thermos so he brought dat back too.
Whew! All of dat in less than two hours (had to omit some oddah WWD! moments cause dis only a blog eh).
Aftah catching da red eye from Honolulu, stopovah in LA, flying to Seattle and driving to our hotel - we've been traveling for nearly 10 hours and we only just begun.
It took us awhile to check into our hotel... well cause first I missed da cutoff and normally there's always one shortly aftah but of course, dis is WWD! so wat happened? Da very next exit was CLOSED! We had to drive about 10 mins before we hit anoddah one and at freeway speeds, dat's far.
We finally we're able to check in but we knew our room wouldn't be ready so we went to get breakfast - more on da hotel latah.
*** I gotta say, Da Wife is da bestest in world cause believe it or not.... she planned our WHOLE intinerary to da very hour (give or take) using of course da excellent tips and suggestions we got from my co-workahs and da bestest posters in da blogesphere, Da WWD! Hui!
***
For those who love da Travel Channel and Food Network (Da Wife does too), we made surah to check out some places our two favorite foodie personalities have tried out. Guy Fieri stopped by Voula's Offshore Cafe and da buggah was packed! Both da line to get in AND da grindz! Funny da place, if you no back in your car... you get one ticket!
I tink EVERYTHING came with hash browns!
I had da HOBO. Seriously, it's called da Hobo. I tink I only got it cause it said Hobo.
Da Wife had da Guy Fieri special... sorry, forgot da name but it was a twist on eggs benedict. It had whole wheat muffin, corned beef, sauerkraut, poached eggs and a thousand island hollandaise sauce.
You would miss it if you didn't look up cause it was high above da door
Da food was..... edible. Da hash browns tasted unseasoned and mines which had sauteed onions and mushrooms with sausage was surprisingly bland. Da Wife's "Fieri Special" was ono to her and I have to agree dat if you're a corned beef and sauerkraut fan, you gonna love dat concoction but dat thousand island hollandaise? Let's just say you gotta love thousand island dressing. Da portions are HUGE and you won't leave hungry I can gurantee you dat - most left with a doggy bag - but if you're in a hurry... dis place not for you.
Trust me.
We waited for quite some time in da cold and once seated, we ordered fairly quickly. It's da food dat takes forevah.
Das why had so much hash browns cooking one time on da grill cause it takes forevah. Unfortunatly, it took a bit longer than we wanted and guess wat? We missed da opening kickoff.
I wanted to get in early and check things out but breakfast ran so long we couldn't make it in time for da kickoff
If you don't know by now, I'm a HUGE 49er fan! While I may not know every single stat or player today, I bleed red and gold evah since I could carry a football. It's been a life long dream of mine to watch a 49er game live (preferably in SF but Seattle did just fine) and now I can finally cross it off my "bucket list".
Before I post da ukumillion pictures, I gotta say, if you're a football fan and have nevah watched a pro football game live, YOU GOTTA! Man, da vibe and electricity you feel being surrounded by rabid fans is unrealz! There were quite a few Niner fans dat made da trip and although they were drowned out by da true blue and flourescent green fans, it only added to da energy. Let's just say - for those who've were at Aloha Stadium wen UH upset BYU with Ty Detmer - it was about 10 times more intense.... and these were two NFL teams with losing record teams playing each oddah!
Qwest Field is very loud and it is frickin' hugemangeous! Although I was little disappointed - being a pro stadium and all - dat da walking areas around da stadium mezzanine and promenade looked almost ghetto. Nothing fancy, nothing glitsy - just sporadic vendors spaced around. Da stadium game field and seating was awesome and it took a long while to absorb everything!
Oh yeah, da game was pretty damn good too even though my team lost!
Da Wife was laughing at me cause while I was just estatic to be there, I was cheering silently everytime da 49ers made a good play.
And to keep da WWD! moments rolling - cause it hasn't stopped since da night before - Da Wife and I get to our seats and it is some FANTASTIC seats! I can't say enough about it but check out da Shout Out at da end. We were right around da 30 yard line about 18 rows up and a perfect view of da field both near and far. Luck would have it too dat da two seats right in front of us was empty and most of da action was happening on our side of da field so I had a clear view snapping away pictures. My first few shots were kinda messed up cause I had da wrong settings but at da start of da second quarter....... it got worse.
Da empty seats in front got filled by a wahine and her boyfriend.... who was 6'7"!!! Now instead of seeing da whole field, I could only see from da goal line to da 15 yard line on my left and maybe da same on da right. I blame my parents for being short but even if I was 6 foot it would have only made a small difference cause dis guy was wide too!
Wassap Wit Dat!
See wat I mean? Well I couldn't.... literally
I was on my tiptoes and trying to see in between shoulders of da oddah fans and caught glimpses hea and there. Like I mentioned before, da stadium is electric and NOBODY sits down! Da seats are for nothing! Seriously, no joke.
Da whole game - except for called and tv time outs - EVERYBODY watches da ENTIRE game STANDING UP! Now those are some fans!
Nonetheless, I had a blast and even da guy in front - cause I told Da Wife he was 6'7" and had to find out so I asked - he sat down at times so I could see and later wen he found out I was taking pictures he moved to da side so I could take some pictures. Cool guy. He looks like Greg Oden both in size and features.
Da pictures doesn't do da stadium nor da game any justice but hea they are...........
Just in awe walking up da steps to dat....
Da second 49er touchdown (missed da first) and you can tell I had da wrong settings.... but it is kind of a cool pic no?
You know me and my 7's..... could it be a sign dat I was destined to be hea?
Da Wife noticed dis.......
Do you know who numbal 90 is?
Jus for you Uncle Rodney
Now only if I was a Seahawk fan.... I definitely would get me one of those!
Kinda on cue - aftah da first Seahawk score, dis bird flew straight across da stadium
Maybe if they offered a Heine at a UH game............
Can you tell I'm happy?
Now.... not so happy
Can you tell it's cold?
Dis should have been da game winning catch but Vernon Davis missed da ball.... right through his hands into his face mask and almost intercepted
My man Patrick Willis
To see more pics from da game and Qwest field, click hea'!
SHOUT OUT: I gotta send one uku-hugemangeous shout out to a Kwonic who wishes to remain anonymous for da game ticket hook up!!! Not only did dis Kwonic drop it off at da hotel, but also gave us a goodie pack filled with travel info, gummy candy
, chocolates and da bestest lifesaver yet.... pocket hand warmers! Da Wife absolutely LOVED dat one!

Awesome pics! Hope you and Da Wife are having a good time!

Lance - I want to travel with you. Where can we go? You sound like a blast to travel with!
December 8th, 2009 at 4:04 am
Great pics BL and awsome seats!
I've been to Washington state several times as my sister used to live there and I have cousins and an uncle there. Great state....kind of cold though.
I used to go to Rams and Raiders games when SoCal had a pro football team. In fact, I saw the last game played at Anaheim stadium between the Raiders and the Rams. That was in 1994 and the next year both teams were gone.
You and the wife keep warm brah! Safe travels!
December 8th, 2009 at 4:50 am
BL:
Shauna must have been there during the cheerleader picture..head tilt to the left
December 8th, 2009 at 5:06 am
Great pics BL.
Mrs. BL is a good sport for coming along with you. My wife would never set foot in a cold windy stadium. It’s too bad the Niners shot themselves in the foot. They should have won that game.
What impresses me most about the pro game is the speed. These guys are going all out and laying the smack on every play. Although I love the Niners I prefer watching the college game due to the variety of plays.
BTW – I don’t know if Da Wife has this spot on her itinerary but you should check this place out, The Crumpet Shop on 1st Street just around the corner from Pike Place Market. It’s a great spot to grab a quick breakfast or a light snack.
Be safe and happy travels to the both of you.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:09 am
I've been in the states going on 8 years now and I have yet to see an NFL game in person. I need to make it a point next season.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:29 am
GA Bows:
Aren't you in Atlanta
Don't feel bad, It's been over 30+ years since I moved from HI and I've watched more Coyote hockey games than the Suns/Cardinals/Dbacks combined in that period and I had Dbacks season tickets.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:35 am
Great narrative and pics, BL...felt like I was there. Never been to a Seahawks game but a handful of Mariners next door, I usually don't go Seattle in the winter. Yeah, it is pretty ghetto around the stadiums. Another food place for lunch nearby is Salumi's, small deli, always get line, but good food and to bring back home pepperoni or other cured meats.
BL, you getting MLC with all your forgetful WWD moments, welcome.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:42 am
One check off your bucket list... Good For You BL! You look so happy! We can feel da smile.
Your bkfst looked like it could feed 3 people with one plate. Plenny food!
Well earned vacation BL and Mrs BL, enjoy!
December 8th, 2009 at 6:10 am
Chee Hoo. Eh BL, good ting you get one awesome wife. Kudos to Da Wife
Classic BL moments (Priceless)
Eh neva mind da grass, going be there when you come back. I'm like your wife, I like to be packed a few days before the trip. It's my wife that always repacking and adding last minute stuff and then when we get to the airport I find stuff that no can go on the carry on and have to toss it (she was not happy wit dat cause was her good shampoo and da bags already checked in.
So you wen get da Yobo Breakfast? I can imagine the hash no more taste. I bet no more salt and stuff. You gotta add your own and when they make plenty li'dat, not going be too good. But at least you went wea your wife wanted to go. Points for you.
And dat game...Awesome. I like the 49ers too. Eh no shame yell for them. Who going hea you? Oh wait, you da Loudest Korean Accountant...
And that Linebacker sitting in front you was a nice guy too. You should have offered him some of your Kim Chee or share some of da cookies, maybe he trade places with you and da wife
since you...um....Height Challenged
Glad you had a safe trip and you got what you wanted
Welcome Home.......
December 8th, 2009 at 6:26 am
Good morning BL!
Sounded like a typical day for you getting ready to go to the airport.
Great pictures! Looks like a great start to your vacation!
December 8th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Puts things in perspective for me as I am heading out the door, and thinking if I have everything. And looking at the pics, (what temperature there, in 40's - 50's?) I think I should take a jacket with me today. Just in case.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:41 am
Sound like good fun even with the rough start.
I hope your dining experiences turn out better. I remember talking with you folks about the Food Network shows and trying to eat at some of those places. Unfortunately it seems that more often than not after being on TV (or the internet) the places just can't properly support the increase in business and the place goes downhill and tends to survive on its reputation instead of its food.
Looking forward to more! Travel safe!

December 8th, 2009 at 6:53 am
Hey, I didn't know you guys were going to Voula's!!! That's my favorite breakfast place in all of Seattle, but yeah, you gotta get there b/4 9 if you're gonna get out in less than an hour. They are always packed on weekends, and even more so after the Guy Fieri Triple-D show. I've been going there for 20 years now, and I love them. (If you knew what he looked like, and knew where to look, Sweetie's picture is on one of the bulletin boards near the cash register!)
I'm amazed you guys weren't two human popsicles after the game - it was fricken freezing on Sunday. Mrs. BL is awesome to handle the cold JUST FOR YOU.
It should be sunny throughout the rest of the week, but just about as cold.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:34 am
Mahalo BL for sharing your trip with us. I was laughing at your "start" as it seems that's normal for you.
But nevah you mind.......you and the Mrs. gonna have a great time!
Looking forward to your next report/adventure.

December 8th, 2009 at 8:05 am
i always pack early because i'm afraid i'll forget something - although now i figure, as long as i have the essentials i'm pretty safe. anything else i could buy when i get there.
are you guys going to check out salumi? i heard it's legendary. when we went to seattle it was only for a weekend and i think they're closed on weekends so we never got to try it.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:17 am
BL! Wow, lucky you have a great FIL! Not everyone would be willing to go back home to get stuff you forgot AFTER they told you not to forget it! haha
It wouldn't be a BL trip without any WWD moments huh? I'm glad you having a good time! The food looked HUGE but yummy. I'm sorry yours wasn't very tasty. I have to check that out one day! Game sounded FUN!
Yay for the Kwonic that hooked you up!!!
December 8th, 2009 at 8:35 am
yeah for the handwarmers! Looking forward to hearing more about your trip. Glad you made it!
December 8th, 2009 at 8:49 am
Great narrative. Glad you enjoyed the game.
Looking forward to more stories of your trip.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:41 am
BL SWEET!!! Small kine drama at the start of your trip, but looks like things are going good so far.
Those was some nice seats you had at the game. Too bad Greg Oden sat in front of you. Enjoy the rest of your trip and we all look forward to hearing more stories and seeing more pics!
December 8th, 2009 at 9:53 am
eh.....whats a trip without some kinda excitement/mishaps before it starts?!
whoa!.....afta dat breakfast.....time fo moe moe i think!
ho brah!.....awesome! you had some good seats! close to da action! and i totally know how you feel bout watching a NFL game live.
coinkidinkly.......i saw my first NFL game in Seattle too! but it was when da Seahawks played in da Kingdome......when Warren Moon was da QB (dats Quarterback......jus in case Queenie get all confused)
yeah....talk bout da electricity! and da fans ARE rabid! decked out in all kine costumes/get-ups and literally foaming at da mouth!

keep dem updates coming!
December 8th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Haha....I always forget at least one thing before I travel and sometimes I don't even realize it until I get on the plane. Nice pictures man. Have a good vacation and stay warm.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Nice pics BL! I went to watch UH play at Qwest field this year - that stadium is pretty mean! Only thing, never have beer for sale! WWD! I guess cause was a college game. That's okay, never have to deal with drunken fools looking to fight.
**********
Oh man, you do all this kine dramas on purpose or what?
I'm a last minute packer too, and I forgot something kinda important on my last trip to Seattle too.
Kinda long story, so I'll spare everyone.
Luckily I could buy what I needed up there, so now I have a spare.
So if you forget a cell charger or memory card, just buy extras up there. Yeah, kinda poho, but now I have a full kit of duplicate stuff ready to go. I keep um all in one bag, and just throw that in my carry on. Main thing I no forget that little bag.
Go eat some seafood bisque at Pike Place Chowder. The buggah is WINNAHS!
December 8th, 2009 at 11:01 am
@BF - so now you have a spare pair of underwear?
Only kidding....
December 8th, 2009 at 11:23 am
@Kage - Of course! I use the "4 day method" of underwear use, so if I get one extra pair, I'm good for half a week, right there.
December 8th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Yeah BL, you FIL sounds like me, soft spoken, punctual, and will remind you about stuffs you might forget...and yes, I will go back to da house for your stuffs even aftah I reminded you, afterall, my daughter did marry you for other good reasons...funny and makes good kim chi.
You probably won't be in the area for breakfast, but Maltby's Cafe which is north and inland a bit has award winning too-much-for-one-person breakfast. We had to wait a little bit but worthwhile, nothing really unique but just right ono waffles and omelets and lots of it.
December 8th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Thanks for sharing your pix!! Looks way too cold for me.
Your wife is a saint. I would have been a screaming maniac if my hubby was still not packed or ready by the time we had to leave.
Have a great time on the rest of your vacation. I can't wait to see more pictures.
December 8th, 2009 at 11:55 am
BF:
You now have a spare set of 'teet
December 8th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
He'll share his spares with us all
and still have leftovers? Such a generous guy . . .
December 8th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
I'll even "spare a square" for you all.
December 8th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

December 8th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Only BL can make it this exciting.
Nice pics! The last time I went to Seattle (which is the only time I went to Seattle) The Kingdome was just imploded and they were building the new stadium.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Rogah dat!
........................................
........................................
I've always wanted to go back to Japan.
And I not dat fun.....
btw, E Komo Mai to WWD! Vern!
.........................................
.........................................
Yeah, nice state and da weather is perfect... as long as not raining.
My friends and I saw UH play USC at da Collesium and even dat was nothing compared to Qwest field.
.........................................
.........................................
Uh, maybe she got 'em from them?
........................................
........................................
Yeah, Da Wife was a real trooper.
You tellin' me?! I was there!
Yeah, by da time I was pressing da shutter da play was practically ovah.
We missed it but we did go to a Russian "bakery".
..........................................
..........................................
Heh? Really? I can see maybe not watching a Hawks game but nevah a Falcons game? They've done well da past few years.
........................................
........................................
I was surprised dat they were actually next door to each oddah! And even da Huskies stadium isn't too far away either.
Yup, already got it down... going there on Friday!
............................................
............................................
It was frozen on.
Yup - guaran's it can feed two comfortably.
........................................
........................................
She was going to da game so I was going to go anywhere else she wanted to go.
Vertically challenged... get it straight.
.........................................
.........................................
No doubt about dat.
.........................................
.........................................
Not even close. Low 30's. Today was 20's. Tonight in da uppah teens.
..........................................
..........................................
Nothing keeps me down.
I have no doubt it will.
.........................................
.........................................
If you evah get a chance... you won't/shouldn't be disappointed.
You tellin' me. We've really lucked out (knock on wood) with da weather although later on in da week it's supposed have snow flurries.
.........................................
.........................................
We found dat out.
Can you believe we walked all da way back to our hotel on Stewart/4th Ave.... from Qwest Field in da 20 degree weather?
Perfect for me.... shorts as long as it doesn't rain!
December 8th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Very normal... unfortunatly.
........................................
........................................
........................................
........................................

...........................................
Well it was a sight I'd nevah fo'get.
........................................
........................................
..........................................
..........................................
Well I guess it wouldn't be a trip at all.
I really liked dat da "Ring of Honor" wasn't overfilled but had da players dat were practically Seahawks for life like Dave Kreig and Steve Largent.
Yeah, I really wanted to see wat da pre-game was like around da stadium.
.........................................
.........................................
Well I did forget my iTouch sync cable.
..........................................
..........................................
UH played at Qwest? Now dat must have been pretty exciting for them!
Yeah, who doesn't enjoy adding more white hairs.
Wat if you fo'get your spare?
Missed dat too.
...........................................
...........................................
Is it near Kirkland? We're heading there tomorrow.
.........................................
.........................................
Yeah, she's pretty patient..... on most things I do.
.........................................
.........................................
I need more than a square... is it two-ply?
..........................................
..........................................
Have been tryin' some local brews.
......................................
......................................
Uh, tanks eh.
Dat was ages ago.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
You going Kirkland tomorrow? Maltby's Cafe is further north and east of Bothell so would be out of the way. I don't know of good restaurants in Kirkland but Bellevue is close by and lots of places to eat and shop (Bellevue Square). I happen to like a great Thai restaurant just a block or so south of Bellevue Square called Chantanee. Son takes us there when we visit.
Just found out today that we may be going to Seattle in February and take a trip to Vancouver for the winter olympics. Son has tickets to see Canada play hockey, speed skating and curling, I better start doing some research about that very odd sport.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Thanks for sharing Awesome pictures.
I bet next time wife will make sure you're packed earlier. Next time leave the cutting the grass for later.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Ho brah - you even wore long pants.
Did you weigh yourself before you left. I like see the damage after you get back. Some serious pounding, you two.
Have fun and stay safe.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Awesome that you got to see them live, even if it was on the road. Some day, I'll get to watch them -- and hopefully at Candlestick! Go Niners!
December 9th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Yup, Seattle Seahawk fans are the craziest and the loudest! They start several hours earlier in the Pioneer Square area...the restaurants are packed with painted faces, liquored up, loud, and friendly rivalry. My office building is just across the Qwest field parking lot and I can hear the fans 7 stories up! Have a great time in Seattle!
December 10th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Olympics? There's commercials already about dat hea'. It's probably going to be packed both hea' and in Vancouver. Curling? Really, how do you practice for dat?
........................................
........................................
It wouldn't help.
.........................................
.........................................
Only to da game.
Das wat I'm afraid of..... but just by looking in da mirror I can tell da "damage".
........................................
........................................
Yeah, dat one is still on my "list".
........................................
........................................
Yeah, it was very very crazy!
E Komo Mai to WWD! Seattle Gail!
