Collector Or Collecting Dust?

March 15th, 2010 by Braddah Lance

Shmall kid time we collected everything cause nevah know if we was going get more or not.

"Adult kid" time we collect wat we tink NOT going get more of.

I remembah I had GI Joe Issue 1 wen I was about 9 years old and loved it! I actually had two version of issue 1. Marvel Comics had made a special edition "monstah" version which was about two feet tall and my cousin was able to get one for me. Maybe it was cause my cousin told me was going be worth money latah or maybe it was just da feeling dat I got something "first" but it was still a shmall kine rush. I still remembah going to da comic/card store in Wahiawa looking for "collectibles" and da "blue book" of comics and baseball/football cards.

Mom threw 'em away saying I should stick to reading books.

I also collected Hot Wheels (out of their package cause had to play wit 'em eh) but mostly truck kine and marbles too! Getting a little older it was still cards but now included "fun" kine like Garbage Pail Kids and trying to get da elusive 'Adam Bomb'. They were stickahs, but funny, nobody stuck 'em on anything and if you saw one li'dat you knew was da "rubbish" ones anyways.

A little older and wiser I became so I hid those from Mom.     But my brother "found" my Jerry Rice rookie cards and traded them away.

Now dat I'm "older", I still collect but not collect. I'm not an avid fan of any particular "genre" but still like to collect... sort of. I like all kine stuff but it's hard cause as adults we know how expensive "collecting" can be. There are two kine's of collectors I believe - da kine dat wants to make money and da kine dat just likes to have 'em. I fall into da latter. I not into how much da buggah going be 5, 10, 15 years from now but I'm more of da "hey! Dat's pretty cool" factor.

So wen I look at all da junk I got lying around you'd tink I was kinda pupule cause there's no connection between anything I "collect". Take a look at these I found as I was cleaning out my shelf dis morning.

Obama bobble heads which I thought was pretty cool

C'mon, tell me oversized Luke Skywalker bobble head in his X-Wing fighther isn't cool

Can't forget about dis kine collectible - Linebacker Patrick Willis from da Niners!

Now tell me dis ain't cool.... Wizard of Oz Pez dispensers! And da box is numbah'd and da characters are spot on in details compared to da real life characters.

Not surah if you know but Nevada gaming law now "prohibits" dollah coins (been for a long while) hence da paper chit wen you get from slot machines wen you cash out. You should see my grandfather-in-law, he get coins from nearly EVERY single casino and made a table with it.... da buggah is SUPAH heavy!

I get one Walt Disney semi-truck towing a motorcycle, of course some baseball and football rookie cards as well, old kine coins (get like a few 1930's and 40's), a handful of $2 dollah bills dat I can remembah off da top of my head and yup, still get my Garbage Pail Kids. See, all kapakahi kine.

Do you collect anything besides dust? Are you one of those dat buy all da protective sleeves and covers? Still get some old school shtuff? Wat did you used to collect back in da day? Are you a collector by whim? Or a "cool factor" collector?

DA PIDGIN WORD OF DA DAY! -
(as quoted from Da Kine Dictionary &/or Pidgin To Da Max… wit a Braddah Lance twist)

RADICAL
(RAD ee koh)

Haole Translation: Heavy duty, extreme, pushing it to the max

Sentence: “Kimo is all radical li'dat wen collecting comic books - always gotta have da first one.”

Sentence: “Brah, no get all radical! No mo' fingahprints.”

SHOUT OUT:   Hau'oli la hanau to a Lanceformer (closet Kwonic) panda hugger! Also one to Jeremy (same day!) and a belated Hau'oli la hanau to one of my best friends, Randy!

    :D :D :D :D :D Good Morning Everyone!!! :D :D :D :D :D

... hey Braddah Lance ... cool collection!!! ... esp. like the football helmet ... cause I did that for a long time too ... but I cannot bee like you ... you collect stuff that take up more space than I like ... and as we all know too well ... the house runs out of space quickly with stuff we collect ...

... I'm an avid sports fan ... so I collected alot of sports stuff ... cards, jerseys, autographs, footballs, whatever ... I was lucky to have a friend who could get me on-field passes for the Pro Bowls in the late 90's ... I still have autographed footballs of guys like Favre, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Kurt Warner ... but I hate that it take up space in boxes ... I can't display it because I don't have anywhere good to do that ...

... now, I'm just into sportscards ... nice and small ... can store or display it easily ... but too fricken expensive nowadays ... gotta stop collecting soon ...

... and yes, if I have something that I'm collecting ... guaranteed it's going to be in some kind of protective sleve, holder, or container ... I'm kind of anal about that ...

    ... Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...

I am not really a collector though when I was small kid time, I did have a stamp collection. The only reason was my dad's army buddy was a mailman in PA and he sent me a lot of stamps. Yeah, I know, a nerdy collection but cool nonetheless. Despite the enormous amount of stuff in our house, I don't really collect anything particular. I also don't like to tell people I "like" certain characters because they think I collect them. For example, I like Winnie-the-Pooh, and at one time, all my friends would only give me Pooh stuff. I like the character but I'm not a collector of the items. My husband sort of collects watches. He does use them but he has a nice collection of Invicta watches and a few other ones. He used to collect nice pens but since the little case is filled, he's moved on to watches. Me, I guess I would collect purses if I could afford it...lol! Nah, j/k. Nice collection you have...

  3. Scott:

I have a small collection of Elvis stuff. I'm a big Elvis fan and people have given me stuff from Graceland. I've got a wall in my new house devoted to Elvis. God bless my wife for allowing that!
p.s., there's a trailer park down the road and I've heard rumors he lives there ;)

  4. KAN:

I was a huge collector as a kid - rocks, coins, stamps, glass figurines. Now we live in a condo that's small enough that our collection-itis has natural limits. :-)

  5. sally:

I'm not a real collector but I do have some items that are keepers.

I became friends with Wally Yonamine several years ago when I met him at the office I used to work at. He autographed a baseball for me and I have it in one of those lucite boxes.

(oh, celebrity list ... hahaha, from the blog the other day)

My boss went to Phoenix when his friend was ending his sportscasting stint there and brought me back a Suns t-shirt autographed by Shaq. Altho' I'm not a baskeball fan, this is pretty special!

And I have my autographed pic of Lydia Pense and Cold Blood signed by all of them! Uber Cool!

.................. do people still say "uber" or is that so yesterday already?

  6. midori-mm:

Lost opportunities!!! I was an avid comic book reader as a child. I had a comic book collection that eventually got thrown away as I grew into adulthood. Now, I find out that people are paying big bucks for comic books that cost me just 10 cents at that time. I still have an "unkept up with" stamp collection sitting in the hall closet.

Scott, I don't think that Elvis is living in that trailer park. I went walking at Ala Moana Park this past Friday and I saw him sitting outside a tent set up on the mauka side of the park. You just couldn't miss those sideburns and dreamy eyes even if the top of his head was bald and he had a paunch.

  7. sally:

Oh! I also have a collection of smashed pennies from places I've been. I keep them in a smashed pennies booklet... yes, it's made esp for smashed pennies.

I also have a little box of mementos from the past. A dog tag from elem school (we had to wear them around our necks), a scroll of paper bus fares, a bus token, report cards, bowling score sheets of my high games and series... that's fun looking at sometimes.

  8. Ynaku:

I was all radical li'dat when the Milk Craze was on. But now, no more. Take up space and my wife like more space then me, so my stuff get's thrown out :x

I found some old coins. I think I get one 1899 Barber dime. Kinds worn out though. I think stay in that money can that I lost the key to so I had to pry em open so stay all hemajang

No do any kine collection nowadays (except bills)

  9. Ynaku:

Hey sally, you had dog tags? Not Rover right? Nah sorry, I used to wear military stuff too.

  10. hemajang:

Many years ago, I was at Hal Bradbury's (da singah, formerly w/Krush) house in Waipahu and his mom has this Elvis shrine. It was a special room full of Elvis memorabilia. She went on these Graceland pilgrimages and must have spent a fortune for her Elvis fixation...kinda eerie, err, I mean "radical."

I was also a stamp collector in my youth. I loved to look at these miniature pieces of art. I still have it somewhere. However, don't do much collecting of anything, nik-naks here and there but nothing serious.

  11. M:

    Howzit BL! :)

I'm not a collector, at least I don't think so. I don't have room to keep stuff even if I did I would forget where it is after I store it away.

Doesn't Rodney collect a lot of stuff too?

  12. Ocean Lover:

    Thinking bout it.....I don't collect ANYTHING. :-(

Looking at your Wizard of Oz Pez dispensers above......WHO are the two at the right end? I'm guessing the green buggah's the WIZARD of Oz (look's more like the FLINSTONES "GAZOO") yet WHO'S THE VAMPIRE? Perhaps that's the WIZARD's butler?

    OL

  13. opso:

used to be shmall kine nuts for Hot Wheels keed time too. i had choke! we even used to have one club.....dat held races and fo display our wares!

now? nah.....no try fo collect nuttin speshul. take up too much space and cost too much coin. but if you look at my FarmVille farm.......

  14. Koreankanak:

I used to collect brand name collectibles. I got them free most of the time. Stuff like a Jolly Green Giant Phone, Heinz Ketchup bottle phone, Mickey Mouse phone, Kraft football Phone, and numerous Soda logo'd coolers. I still got them but do not know where I put them.

  15. 9th Island Girl:

When I was young, I used to collect marbles. Had all kine radical kine: peewee (peerie?), bumbucha, any kine.

My daughter collected My Little Pony for the longest time.

I had a bookmark collection, with really nice ones made out of koa, or Hawaiian quilt kine. I sort of stopped doing that, though. Like KAN, I live in a condo and no mo space for dat kine stuff.

 Yeah, a little nerdy but you know wat? I had one of those too! My cousin was a bonafide nerd but he'd always give me stuff li'dat. I still remembah he used to have a stamp for every President we had at da time.

I also don't like to tell people I "like" certain characters because they think I collect them. For example, I like Winnie-the-Pooh, and at one time, all my friends would only give me Pooh stuff. I like the character but I'm not a collector of the items.

I can see dat happening all da time but at least your friends were "observant" and thoughtful enough to tink along those lines.

My husband sort of collects watches. He does use them but he has a nice collection of Invicta watches and a few other ones. He used to collect nice pens but since the little case is filled, he's moved on to watches.

  17. jaydee:

I still have my comic books from "small-kid" time. Early issues of Spidey, Fantastic Four, The Hulk etc.

I got about 20 of them certified and they are sealed in a hard plastic case but the others are stored in 5mil bags, over a hundred in all.

I don't know what I'll do with them....give 'em to 'da kids when I die I guess.

  18. KAN:

@OL, #12: that green guy is the wizard (as processed by his "wizardry"). He doesn't look at all like the guy behind the curtain.

@BL: rocks - pretty rocks. Different colors, ones that are worn smooth at the beach, li'dat. I still collect rocks - the Washington coast has TONS of beautiful rocks. I only have a ton or so tucked into different corners of the condo.

  19. Ocean Lover:

Okay......I "see" um now. Sheesh.........even WITH my eyeglasses on (and my imagination "on") I finally see the Wicked Witch. I've seen dat movie a gazillion times......the end where the Wicked Witch's legs are under the house freaked me out.

I still say the "green guy" looks like GAZOO though...........

    OL

  20. kikaida:

Aww, No Kikaida stuff?? Maybe you too young... BTW, congrats on the baby on the way!

  21. BananaFysh:

Oh man, I'm a major collector. Just ask my wife about all my "junks."

I have several thousand comic books in my garage, yellowing as I type. :(

I was buying cards, and some collectible toys. Now they just sit in my house collecting dust, as I missed my window to sell those things at a premium. :(

I sold a bunch of old, bus up Hot Wheels to a friend, and he was selling them on ebay for a VERY GOOD price! D'oh!! I didn't think they would be worth much, since they were kinda beat up - guess I shoulda checked eBay firstr. Well, at least my friend took me out to lunch a few times with his profits.

  22. NKHEA:

Howzit BL and all you udda bugga's :)

Me I get all kine junks...... I mean collectables.....juke box, phone booth, tansu's, singer sewing machine, coins, mostly just old stuff I find on da jobs

    Oh yeah.....congrats BL & Mrs. BL ;)

    NKHEA.....get plenty junks 8O

  23. EMM386:

I have a HUGE toy collection. Most of them aren't worth money, but I just like having them. I don't keep them pristine in the box. I always take them out of the box and play with them.

  24. snow:

hey, i used to collect rocks, just like KAN! lol... pretty ones... i even had one of those rock polishing/tumbler things! my dad's friend was a jeweler and he used to give me rocks from his collection that were pretty cool!

i don't have much that i collect now... i used to "collect" watches, shoes, and handbags. does that count? ;)

  25. Coconut Willy:

    do boogers count?

actually, just got a few baseball cards.

and got the 50 state quarter set for the kids.

    (the wife no like clutter)

  26. Scott:

...when I was living in Hawaii I collected logo golf balls from all the courses I played. My goal was to play all the courses on Oahu. I played them all except Waialae C.C.
I have a nice golf ball display with 37 Hawaii logo balls, some outer island courses included.
They'll make a nice conversation piece in my corner office when/if/ever I get a job :(

    NKHEA...... need some help

  28. sally:

You guys were mentioning POGs. Being the rebel, I refused to get in to that. Then I got a free one from a store. Then a free one from a restaurant. Suddenly it became a game to see how many POGs I could collect without spending a penny! I ended up with two binders of them!

I dunno where they went. Must have thrown them away or went into the Goodwill box.

Please don't tell me that "Portagee POG" (da square one) is worth money now.

  29. hawaiiobsessed:

My kids "collect" rocks. Problem is they aren't too selective. I used to collect Princess Diana memorabilia. We moved and unbeknownst to me my husband threw away "gasp" my collection. When she tragically died I went looking for it..... grrrr!

  30. TwoFish:

I try to not collect dust, but that is a given if I want the windows open. Never into collecting philately (stamps), or coins, or things like that. I wish I had the old comics that my older siblings used to read, that got me interested in the Classics and all that. But I think the brother above me took it for when his kids were young, and they might have been sold. Also had some Hawaiian story books, paperback with the staple in the middle, and I think those are long gone.

I was buying estate jewelry from pre-1950's (that's a loose term) and loved the settings back then - so detailed. I don't use any of them, but nice to look at and admire.

I was interested in vintage stuff too, like old sewing machines that I could use in case the electricity went out again - gotta hem the pants that are too long.

I was, and am interested in fountain pens - yes, I do use these daily. Anyone have some laying around that they're considering donating or selling, please contact me!

Oh yeah, for a while, collected interesting shells found on beaches after storms. Rarity to find those now days.

  31. sally:

  34. Bre:

I collect Barbie dolls. I have since I was in grade school. I have moved on to the collector editions but they are so beautiful. I have over 100. My husband is sweet and doesn't complain. In fact, he buys me one every year. The newest one I want is Athena, from Greek mythology.

  35. sally:

@Snow: MY SIL and I went through a watch phase, we used to buy all kinds of cheapie watches and had a friendly competition of who had more. I stopped when I had 24 watches.

Funny how all those cheapie watches outlasted any Seiko I ever owned.
Funnier still is how I don't even wear a watch these days since my cell has the time.

    Scott:
...when I was living in Hawaii I collected logo golf balls from all the courses I played. My goal was to play all the courses on Oahu. I played them all except Waialae C.C. I have a nice golf ball display with 37 Hawaii logo balls, some outer island courses included.

Dat must be some collection! I've always wanted to do dat.... but you have to actually golf frequently to proudly display them. At dis rate, I should be done wen I'm 90.

They'll make a nice conversation piece in my corner office when/if/ever I get a job

I try to not collect dust, but that is a given if I want the windows open.

    Yeah, I hate dat.

Also had some Hawaiian story books, paperback with the staple in the middle, and I think those are long gone.

Do publishers even make those kine anymore?

I was buying estate jewelry from pre-1950's (that's a loose term) and loved the settings back then - so detailed. I don't use any of them, but nice to look at and admire.

Really? Wat does estate jewelry really mean?

I was interested in vintage stuff too, like old sewing machines

Wow! Your home must be a blast from da past!

I was, and am interested in fountain pens - yes, I do use these daily. Anyone have some laying around that they're considering donating or selling, please contact me!

Aren't those kine pens really expensive?

Oh yeah, for a while, collected interesting shells found on beaches after storms. Rarity to find those now days.

Me too just cause they looked neat.

@BL: Some Transformers, but they're the new ones, from the Universe/Henkei series. They are actually really nice BTW. I have a bunch of toys from Macross (2 1/60 scale VF-1S Kanzen Henkei and the Koenig Monster. I also have the 4 1/15 scale motoslaves from Bubblegum Crisis and the 1/6 scale Attelier Sai Bubblegum Crisis figures. I also have a ton of assorted figures from Gashapons and One Coin figures from Japan.
